National survey on understanding nursing academics' perspectives on digital health education

Abstract

Aim

This study explored the knowledge and confidence levels of nursing academics in teaching both the theories and practical skills of digital health in undergraduate nursing programs.

Design

A cross-sectional study.

Methods

A structured online survey was distributed among nursing academics across Australian universities. The survey included two sections: (1) the participants' demographics and their nursing and digital health teaching experience; (2) likert scales asking the participants to rate their knowledge and confidence to teach the theories and practical skills of four main themes; digital health technologies, information exchange, quality and digital professionalism.

Results

One hundred and nineteen nursing academics completed part one, and 97 individuals completed part two of the survey. Only 6% (n = 5) of the participants reported having formal training in digital health. Digital health was mainly taught as a module (n = 57, 45.9%), and assessments of theory or practical application of digital health in the nursing curriculum were uncommon, with 79 (69.9%) responding that there was no digital health assessment in their entry to practice nursing programs. Among the four core digital health themes, the participants rated high on knowledge of digital professionalism (22.4% significant knowledge vs. 5.9% no knowledge) but low on information exchange (30% significant knowledge vs. 28.3% no knowledge). Statistically significant (p < .001) associations were found between different themes of digital health knowledge and the level of confidence in teaching its application. Nursing academics with more than 15 years of teaching experience had a significantly higher level of knowledge and confidence in teaching digital health content compared with those with fewer years of teaching experience.

Conclusion

There is a significant gap in nursing academics' knowledge and confidence to teach digital health theory and its application in nursing. Nursing academics need to upskill in digital health to prepare the future workforce to be capable in digitally enabled health care settings.

Implications for the Profession

Nursing academics have a limited level of digital knowledge and confidence in preparing future nurses to work in increasingly technology-driven health care environments. Addressing this competency gap and providing sufficient support for nursing academics in this regard is essential.

The effect of long‐term COVID‐19 on aetiological factors related to nocturia

Abstract

Aims and Objectives

This study was conducted to examine the possible aetiology of nocturia in patients with long-term COVID-19.

Background

Physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms, an increase in overactive bladder symptoms, especially from urinary system complaints, has been reported in patients with COVID-19, 10–14 weeks after the illness.

Design

A descriptive design.

Methods

The study consisted of 70 patients who had experienced COVID-19, had nocturia, and were followed in the State Hospital between April and July 2022. Data were collected using a patient information form, the ‘TANGO’ nocturia screening tool, and the Visual Analog Scale. This study was created in accordance with the STROBE Statement Checklist.

Results

When the nocturia effects of long-term COVID-19 were examined it was determined that the urinary tract was the ‘priority’ aetiological condition. It was observed that there was a significant difference between the aetiological factor groups in terms of the mean age of the patients and the number of nocturia (p < .05). According to post-hoc analysis, the mean age of patients with a dominant cardio-metabolic factor was found to be significantly younger (p < .05). In addition, when comparing the number of nocturia according to the aetiological factors of the patients, it was observed that the number of nocturia was significantly frequent in the patients with a dominant sleep factor (p < .05).

Conclusions

It was found that the urinary tract aetiological factor was dominant in patients with long-term COVID-19 and nocturia, patients with a dominant cardiovascular aetiological factor were younger, and that the number of nocturia was higher in patients with a dominant sleep factor.

Relevance to Clinical Practice

Identification of the early signs and symptoms and underlying causes of nocturia in individuals with post-COVID-19 syndrome will enable nurses and health professionals to guide the early identification of different underlying problems, as well as the implementation of approaches to treat and eliminate nocturia.

The patients contributed to the study by agreeing to participate in the evaluation of nocturia complaints after COVID-19 infection.

Parental supporter in pediatric resuscitation: A mixed‐method study with Delphi and analytic hierarchy process

Abstract

Introduction

Providing support to parents is an evidence-based practice and a crucial part of family-centered nursing care. However, it is not clear who and how to provide the best support to parents during and after their child's resuscitation attempts.

Purpose

This study was conducted to explore the characteristics and roles of parental supporters responsible for caring for parents during and after their child's resuscitation.

Methods

This is a mixed-method study combining the Delphi technique and the Analytic Hierarchy Process. A list of potentially important items describing the characteristics and roles of parental supporters caring for parents during and after pediatric resuscitation was developed through qualitative interviews with parents and members of the resuscitation team, and a thorough literature search. Then, the Delphi round was conducted with key experts. In the final step, the Analytic Hierarchy Process was used for ranking items in the order of their importance.

Results

A list with 69 items describing the characteristics and roles of parental supporters was developed. 15 items (21.74%) were related to the “Characteristics of parental supporter” category; 8 items (11.59%) were related to the “Roles of a parental supporter during resuscitation” category; 13 items (18.84%) were related to the “Roles of a parental supporter after successful resuscitation” category; 23 items (33.34%) were related to the “Roles of a parental supporter after unsuccessful resuscitation” category; and 10 items (14.49%) were related to the “Roles of a parental supporter after unsuccessful resuscitation with help of other staff of the hospital” category.

Conclusion

The findings of this study can be used to develop guidelines that include parental supporter characteristics and roles to support parents during and after their child's resuscitation according to family-centered care practices in pediatric settings.

Clinical Relevance

Study findings indicate the need for the presence of a parental supporter during and after pediatric resuscitation, whether witnessed by the parents or not. Knowledge regarding the characteristics and roles of parental supporters can be used in practice to uphold family-centered nursing care during critical situations.
