Evaluation of the effectiveness and practicality of erbium lasers for ceramic restoration removal: A retrospective clinical analysis

Background

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness and practicality of erbium lasers in the removal of ceramic restorations and appliances from natural teeth and dental implant abutments in clinical practice.

Methods

A retrospective analysis was conducted, involving 29 clinical cases with a total of 52 abutments requiring the removal of various ceramic restorations. The analysis evaluated the clinical procedures performed, including the type and material of the prosthetic, the type of cement used, laser setting parameters, retrieval time, and retrieval success.

Results

Out of the 52 abutments, 50 were successfully retrieved without causing any damage (>95%) using either an Er,Cr:YSGG laser (N = 6) or an Er:YAG laser (N = 46). In one case, a crown was partially sectioned to prevent any negative impact of laser irradiation on the adhesive strength between the post and tooth, and in another case, a fracture occurred during debonding. The restorations consisted of 13 lithium disilicate and 39 zirconia units, including six veneers, 38 single crowns, and three fixed partial dentures (FPDs). The retrieval time varied depending on the restoration type, material thickness, cement type, retention form/fitting of the abutment and restoration, ranging from 2.25 ±0.61 minutes for veneers, 6.89 ±8.07 minutes for crowns, to 25 ±10 minutes per abutment for FPDs. Removal of a zirconia crown required more time, 7.12±8.91 minutes, compared to a lithium disilicate crown, 5.86 ±2.41 minutes. The debonding time was influenced by the laser settings as well as materials and types of prosthesis.

Conclusions

Erbium lasers present a safe and effective alternative to invasive methods for removing ceramic restorations, without causing harm to the abutment or prosthesis. Laser-assisted debonding allows for recementation of the restorations during the same appointment, making it a conservative and viable option for ceramic crown retrieval in clinical settings.

Towards a pan marsupial sero-immunological tool in the demanding field of wildlife serology: Marsupial immunoglobulin-binding capability with protein A/G, protein L and anti-kangaroo antibody

Detection of infections in wildlife species is increasingly important to reduce the risk of spreading zoonotic and economically important parasites, understand disease epidemiology and promote the conservation of wildlife species. Serological tests are key in disease diagnosis and surveillance by detecting immunoglobulins against infectious agents. However, the need for species-specific reagents has limited the application of serological tests in wildlife species. This study evaluated the serum immunoglobulin-binding capability of polyclonal anti-kangaroo antibody and two non-species-specific reagents, including protein A/G and protein L, with the largest range of Australian marsupial species so far, including 32 species representing three major marsupial orders. Immunoglobulin-binding capability was assessed using immunoblotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot techniques. Variation in immunoglobulin-binding capability was observed between the three reagents and across the species tested, both across but also within taxonomic groups. Taxonomic distance was thus not always a good predictor of immunoglobulin-binding affinity, emphasizing the need to validate these reagents for each species separately. However, all three reagents bound with the serum immunoglobulins of most marsupial species tested. The findings of this study provide a valuable reference for species differences in affinity to protein A/G, protein L and anti-kangaroo antibody, assisting in the selection of appropriate reagents and the development of sero-immunological assays in Australian marsupials.

Effect of PRISMA 2009 on reporting quality in systematic reviews and meta-analyses in high-impact dental medicine journals between 1993–2018

Introduction

The PRISMA guidelines were published in 2009 to address inadequate reporting of key methodological details in systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRs/MAs). This study sought to assess the impact of PRISMA on the quality of reporting in the full text of dental medicine journals.

Methods

This study assessed the impact of PRISMA (2009) on thirteen methodological details in SRs/MAs published in the highest-impact dental medicine journals between 1993–2009 (n = 211) and 2012–2018 (n = 618). The study further examined the rate of described use of PRISMA in the abstract or full text of included studies published post- PRISMA and the impact of described use of PRISMA on level of reporting. This study also examined potential effects of inclusion of PRISMA in Instructions for Authors, along with study team characteristics.

Results

The number of items reported in SRs/MAs increased following the publication of PRISMA (pre-PRISMA: M = 7.83, SD = 3.267; post-PRISMA: M = 10.55, SD = 1.4). Post-PRISMA, authors rarely mention PRISMA in abstracts (8.9%) and describe the use of PRISMA in the full text in 59.87% of SRs/MAs. The described use of PRISMA within the full text indicates that its intent (guidance for reporting) is not well understood, with over a third of SRs/MAs (35.6%) describing PRISMA as guiding the conduct of the review. However, any described use of PRISMA was associated with improved reporting. Among author team characteristics examined, only author team size had a positive relationship with improved reporting.

Conclusion

Following the 2009 publication of PRISMA, the level of reporting of key methodological details improved for systematic reviews/meta-analyses published in the highest-impact dental medicine journals. The positive relationship between reference to PRISMA in the full text and level of reporting provides further evidence of the impact of PRISMA on improving transparent reporting in dental medicine SRs/MAs.

Potential risk of proton pump inhibitors for Parkinson’s disease: A nationwide nested case-control study

Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use is a potential risk factor for neurodegenerative disease development; however, its role in Parkinson’s disease (PD) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between PPI use and PD risk. A total of 31,326 patients with newly diagnosed PD were matches by age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, and hypertension with 125,304 controls at a ratio of 1:4. The data were collected from the Korean National Health Insurance Services Database from January 2010 to December 2019. Cumulative defined daily doses of PPIs were extracted from treatment claims. We examined the association between PPI use and PD risk using conditional logistic regression. To prevent protopathic bias, we excluded patients diagnosed with PD within a 1-year lag period after PPI exposure. We applied 2- and 3-year lag periods for sensitivity analysis. PPI use was associated with an increased risk of PD when a 1-year lag period was applied between PPI exposure and PD development (adjusted odds ratio, 1.10; 95% confidence interval, 1.07–1.13). Development of an enhanced analytical method utilizing pepper matrix as an analyte protectant for sensitive GC‒MS/MS detection of dimethipin in animal-based food products

Herein, an analytical method using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC‒MS/MS) was devised to detect the presence of the troublesome pesticide dimethipin in various animal-based food products, including chicken, pork, beef, eggs, and milk. The injection port was primed with a matrix derived from pepper leaves that acts as an analyte protectant (AP) to safeguard the target compound from thermal degradation during gas chromatography. The presence of AP resulted in a remarkable limit of quantification of 0.005 mg/kg for dimethipin in five matrices. Three different versions (original, EN, and AOAC) of the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method were compared for dimethipin extraction, with a double-layer solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge utilized for matrix purification. A seven-point external calibration curve was established for dimethipin in the five matrices, demonstrating excellent linearity with determination coefficients (R2) ≥ 0.998. The developed quantitative method was validated by fortifying each matrix with three different concentrations of standard dimethipin, and the average recovery fell within the acceptable range outlined in the CODEX guidelines (ranging from 88.8% to 110.0%), with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of ≤ 11.97%. This method effectively addresses the challenge of analyzing dimethipin and can therefore be used as a routine monitoring tool for dimethipin across various matrices.

Downscaling epidemiological time series data for improving forecasting accuracy: An algorithmic approach

Data scarcity and discontinuity are common occurrences in the healthcare and epidemiological dataset and often is needed to form an educative decision and forecast the upcoming scenario. Often to avoid these problems, these data are processed as monthly/yearly aggregate where the prevalent forecasting tools like Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), and TBATS often fail to provide satisfactory results. Artificial data synthesis methods have been proven to be a powerful tool for tackling these challenges. The paper aims to propose a novel algorithm named Stochastic Bayesian Downscaling (SBD) algorithm based on the Bayesian approach that can regenerate downscaled time series of varying time lengths from aggregated data, preserving most of the statistical characteristics and the aggregated sum of the original data. The paper presents two epidemiological time series case studies of Bangladesh (Dengue, Covid-19) to showcase the workflow of the algorithm. The case studies illustrate that the synthesized data agrees with the original data regarding its statistical properties, trend, seasonality, and residuals. In the case of forecasting performance, using the last 12 years data of Dengue infection data in Bangladesh, we were able to decrease error terms up to 72.76% using synthetic data over actual aggregated data.

Friendship interventions for children with neurodevelopmental needs: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Rationale

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental language disorder (DLD), intellectual disability (ID), and social (pragmatic) communication disorder (SPCD) experience difficulties with social functioning due to differences in their social, emotional and cognitive skills. Previous systematic reviews have focussed on specific aspects of social functioning rather than broader peer functioning and friendships.

Objective

To systematically review and methodologically appraise the quality and effectiveness of existing intervention studies that measured friendship outcomes for children with ADHD, autism, DLD, ID, and SPCD.

Method

Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched five electronic databases: CINAHL, Embase, Eric, PsycINFO, and PubMed. Two independent researchers screened all abstracts and disagreements were discussed with a third researcher to reach consensus. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomised Trials.

Results

Twelve studies involving 15 interventions were included. Studies included 683 children with a neurodevelopmental disorder and 190 typically-developing children and diagnosed with either autism or ADHD. Within-group meta-analysis showed that the pooled intervention effects for friendship across all interventions were small to moderate (z = 2.761, p = 0.006, g = 0.485). The pooled intervention effect between intervention and comparison groups was not significant (z = 1.206, p = 0.400, g = 0.215).

Conclusion

Findings provide evidence that some individual interventions are effective in improving social functioning and fostering more meaningful friendships between children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their peers. Effective interventions involved educators, targeted child characteristics known to moderate peer functioning, actively involved peers, and incorporated techniques to facilitate positive peer perceptions and strategies to support peers. Future research should evaluate the effectiveness of friendship interventions for children with DLD, ID and SPCD, more comprehensively assess peer functioning, include child self-report measures of friendship, and longitudinally evaluate downstream effects on friendship.

Can digital transformation reduce corporate stock price crashes?

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of enterprises’ digital transformation on the risk of stock price crashes, but also to study the mediating role of enterprises’ financialization and accounting conservatism in the enterprises’ digital transformation on stock price crash risk.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the data of 2,599 listed companies in China from 2010 to 2019, this paper constructs indicators of enterprise digital transformation through word frequency analysis method, and uses fixed-effects model and mediated-effects model to explore the impact and mechanism of enterprise digital transformation on the stock price crash risk.

Findings

This study shows that firms’ digital transformation reduces the risk of stock price crashes and that financialization of firms and accounting conservatism play a significant mediating effect between enterprises’ digital transformation and the risk of stock price crashes.

Originality/value

This study enriches the study of stock price crash risk by including digital transformation in the field of stock price crash research, and it examines the mediating roles of financialization of enterprises and accounting conservatism, which provides a new explanatory mechanism to the study of the correlation between digital transformation of enterprises and the risk of stock price crash.

Using Gaussian process for velocity reconstruction after coronary stenosis applicable in positron emission particle tracking: An <i>in-silico</i> study

Accurate velocity reconstruction is essential for assessing coronary artery disease. We propose a Gaussian process method to reconstruct the velocity profile using the sparse data of the positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) in a biological environment, which allows the measurement of tracer particle velocity to infer fluid velocity fields. We investigated the influence of tracer particle quantity and detection time interval on flow reconstruction accuracy. Three models were used to represent different levels of stenosis and anatomical complexity: a narrowed straight tube, an idealized coronary bifurcation with stenosis, and patient-specific coronary arteries with a stenotic left circumflex artery. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particle tracking, and the Gaussian process of kriging were employed to simulate and reconstruct the pulsatile flow field. The study examined the error and uncertainty in velocity profile reconstruction after stenosis by comparing particle-derived flow velocity with the CFD solution. Using 600 particles (15 batches of 40 particles) released in the main coronary artery, the time-averaged error in velocity reconstruction ranged from 13.4% (no occlusion) to 161% (70% occlusion) in patient-specific anatomy. The error in maximum cross-sectional velocity at peak flow was consistently below 10% in all cases. PEPT and kriging tended to overestimate area-averaged velocity in higher occlusion cases but accurately predicted maximum cross-sectional velocity, particularly at peak flow. Kriging was shown to be useful to estimate the maximum velocity after the stenosis in the absence of negative near-wall velocity.

A Mendelian randomization study on the causal association of circulating cytokines with colorectal cancer

Background

Circulating cytokines have been associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). However, their causal correlation remains undetermined. This investigation uses genetic data to evaluate the mechanism that links circulating cytokines and CRC via Mendelian Randomization (MR).

Methods

A two-sample MR evaluation was carried out to investigate the mechanism associating circulating cytokines and CRC in individuals of European ancestry. The Genome-wide association studies statistics, which are publically accessible, were used. Eligible instrumental SNPs that were significantly related to the circulating cytokines were selected. Multiple MR analysis approaches were carried out, including Simple Mode, inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, Weighted Mode, Weighted Median, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO) methods.

Results

The evidence supporting the association of genetically predicted circulating levels with the increased risk of CRC was revealed; these included vascular endothelial growth factor (OR = 1.352, 95% CI: 1.019–1.315, P = 0.024), interleukin-12p70 (OR = 1.273, 95% CI: 1.133–1.430, P = 4.68×10−5), interleukin-13 (OR = 1.149, 95% CI: 1.012–1.299, P = 0.028), interleukin-10 (OR = 1.230, 95% CI: 1.013–1.493, P = 0.037), and interleukin-7 (OR = 1.191, 95% CI: 1.023–1.386 P = 0.024). Additionally, MR analysis negative causal association between macrophage colony stimulating factor and CRC (OR = 0.854, 95% CI: 0.764–0.955, P = 0.005). The data from Simple Mode, Weighted Median, MR-Egger, and Weighted Mode analyses were consistent with the IVW estimates. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis indicated that the presence of no horizontal pleiotropy to bias the causal estimates.

Conclusion

This investigation identified a causal association between circulating cytokines levels risk of CRC and may provide a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of CRC, as well as offer promising leads for the development of novel therapeutic targets for CRC.

Changes in life satisfaction among middle-aged adults living alone over a 12-year span

This secondary analysis used data collected for the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from 2006 to 2018 to examine changes in life satisfaction among middle-aged adults living alone in South Korea. Individuals who were over 45 years of age, lived alone at the time of the first data collection wave, and responded at least twice to the survey over the 12-year study period were included in the final linear mixed model (N = 124). Life satisfaction increased for those who had increased assets, were widowed, and had more frequent contact with acquaintances (i.e., once a month and once a week compared with once a year). Life satisfaction decreased as the number of chronic illnesses increased for underweight individuals compared with normal weight or overweight individuals and for depressed versus non-depressed individuals. This study’s findings indicate that increased social support is beneficial for middle-aged marginalized individuals, including those who are economically disadvantaged, have few social interactions, are underweight, and have chronic illnesses.

In vitro assessments of nanoplexes of polyethylenimine-coated graphene oxide-plasmid through various cancer cell lines and primary mesenchymal stem cells

Efficient gene therapy relies on an efficient gene delivery system. Viral gene delivery approaches excel in transferring and expressing external genes; however, their immunogenicity and difficulty in large-scale production limit their clinical applications. In contrast, nanoparticle-based gene delivery systems have gained increasing attention due to less immunogenicity and more convenience for large-scale production. Nevertheless, their poor transfection efficiency compared to viral systems remains a significant obstacle. In the present study, we investigated the transfection efficiency of our PEI-coated graphene oxides in HEK293T, Calu-3, Calu-6 cell lines, and primary human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (MSC). The high surface ratio and good biocompatibility of graphene oxide make it an appealing tool for gene delivery systems. However, the low dispersity of graphene oxide in aqueous environments is the first barrier that needs to be conquered. For this, we enhanced the dispersity and stability of graphene oxide in water by sonicating it for at least 5 hours at a pH of 7. Then, graphene oxide was conjugated with branched PEI (25 kDa) to have a positive charge, enabling it to condense nucleic acids with a naturally negative potential. The physio-chemical characteristics of our synthesized nano-carriers (GO-PEI) were determined by DLS, FT-IR, and AFM. The utilized plasmid in polyplexes contained a GFP gene, allowing us to verify transfection efficiency through fluorescent microscopy and flow cytometry. While GO-PEI carriers were highly efficient in transfecting HEK293T cells, the transfection efficiency in MSCs and Calu-3 cells was notably low. We suppose that the main reason for the low transfection efficiency of GO-PEI in these cells is due to its higher toxicity. Despite this, considering the various advantages of graphene oxide in drug delivery as well as its optical and electrical applications in biomedicine, we propose to functionalize graphene oxide with more biocompatible materials to enhance its potential as a successful gene carrier in these cell types.

Contraceptive use by number of living children in Ghana: Evidence from the 2017 maternal health survey

Background

There is a significant literature describing the link between parity and contraceptive use. However, there is limited knowledge about the disaggregation by parity of the type of contraceptives. In this study, we describe the use of contraceptives by parity among women of reproductive age in Ghana, focusing on use of highly effective methods (injection, pill, intrauterine device, implant, and sterilization).

Methods

Using the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health Survey, a nationally-representative cross-sectional household survey, we describe contraceptive method use by number of living children among sexually active women of reproductive age. We then estimated predictors of use of highly effective contraception in a multilevel logistic regression model.

Results

Most women in this survey are not using any method of contraception, although this varies by whether or not they have begun childbearing. Contraceptive method use varies by number of living children. Before having children, natural (periodic abstinence and withdrawal) and episodic (condoms) methods dominate. Once a woman has one living child, method preference changes to injectables and implants. Factors associated with using a highly effective method of contraception are: having >3 children, being in a relationship, having had an abortion, being younger than age 30, and having had sexual intercourse within days of answering the survey (p Conclusion

In this analysis, the number of living children a woman has, her age, and timing of last intercourse are the most significant predictors of using a highly effective method of contraception. However, the majority of participants in this study report not using any method of contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Future research that attempts to unpack the disconnect between not wanting to become pregnant and not using contraception is warranted.

Attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals among Thai medical students

Background

The global population of individuals with gender diversity or LGBTQ+ people is on the rise. However, negative attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals persist, even among healthcare professionals, creating barriers to healthcare access. These attitudes are influenced by cultural variations worldwide and necessitate investigation across diverse cultures and settings.

Objectives

This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people and describe associated factors with being LGBTQ+ among Thai medical students.

Methods

During the 2021 academic year, a survey was conducted at a medical school in Bangkok, Thailand, collecting demographic data and attitudes measured by a standardised Thai questionnaire. Descriptive statistics as well as bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to describe characteristics and association.

Results

A total of 806 medical students participated, with a neutral attitude being the most prevalent (72.2%), followed by a positive attitude (27.2%), and a minority reporting a negative attitude (0.6%). Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed significant associations between positive attitudes and female sexual identity (aOR 2.02, 95%CI 1.45–2.81, p-value Conclusion

Positive attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community are essential for physicians, emphasising the need to study factors that contribute to positive attitudes in order to foster an LGBTQ+-friendly environment for both patients and medical students.

Deciphering the immune landscape of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: A single-cell transcriptomic analysis of regulatory T cell responses to PD-1 blockade therapy

Immunotherapy is changing the Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) landscape and improving outcomes for patients with recurrent or metastatic HNSCC. A deeper understanding of the tumor microenvironment (TME) is required in light of the limitations of patients’ responses to immunotherapy. Here, we aimed to examine how Nivolumab affects infiltrating Tregs in the HNSCC TME. We used single-cell RNA sequencing data from eight tissues isolated from four HNSCC donors before and after Nivolumab treatment. Interestingly, the study found that Treg counts and suppressive activity increased following Nivolumab therapy. We also discovered that changes in the CD44-SSP1 axis, NKG2C/D-HLA-E axis, and KRAS signaling may have contributed to the increase in Treg numbers. Furthermore, our study suggests that decreasing the activity of the KRAS and Notch signaling pathways, and increasing FOXP3, CTLA-4, LAG-3, and GZMA expression, may be mechanisms that enhance the killing and suppressive capacity of Tregs. Additionally, the result of pseudo-temporal analysis of the HNSCC TME indicated that after Nivolumab therapy, the expression of certain inhibitory immune checkpoints including TIGIT, ENTPD1, and CD276 and LY9, were decreased in Tregs, while LAG-3 showed an increased expression level. The study also found that Tregs had a dense communication network with cluster two, and that certain ligand-receptor pairs, including SPP1/CD44, HLA-E/KLRC2, HLA-E/KLRK1, ANXA1/FPR3, and CXCL9/FCGR2A, had notable changes after the therapy. These changes in gene expression and cell interactions may have implications for the role of Tregs in the TME and in response to Nivolumab therapy.

Influence of horizontal resistance loads on spatiotemporal and ground reaction force variables during maximal sprint acceleration

This study aimed to elucidate the influence of horizontal resistance loads on the spatiotemporal and ground reaction force (GRF) variables during maximal sprint acceleration. Nine male sprinters (20.2 ± 1.2 years; 175.3 ± 4.5 cm, 69.7 ± 6.1 kg) performed sprint-running with six loading conditions of one unresisted and five resisted loads of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 kg using a resistance training device with intelligent drag technology. Only human after all? a pre-registered study on gaze behavior and humanity attributions to people with facial difference

There is a great deal of indirect evidence suggesting that people with facial difference (FD) may be dehumanized. This research aimed to provide direct evidence of the dehumanization of people with FD based on the stigmatizing reactions they elicit. More precisely, previous findings revealed that the specific way people with FD are looked upon is related to the feelings of disgust they elicit. Since disgust fosters dehumanization, our aim was to confirm the modified pattern of visual attention towards people with FD and to determine whether it was also related to humanness perception. For that purpose, a preregistered eye-tracking study (N = 97) using a former experimental design extended to humanity attributions was conducted. This research replicates findings showing that the face of people with FD is explored differently in comparison with other human faces. However, the hypothesis that people with FD were given fewer humanity attributions was not supported. Therefore, the hypothesis of a "dehumanizing gaze" towards people with FD–beyond humanity-related attributions–is discussed in light of these findings.

Identification of genes regulated by lipids from seaweed Susabinori (<i>Pyropia yezoensis</i>) involved in the improvement of hepatic steatosis: Insights from RNA-Seq analysis in obese <i>db</i>/<i>db</i> mice

Hepatic steatosis is an early stage in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and can lead to the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a major cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. Identification of dietary components that can alleviate hepatic steatosis is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies for NAFLD. Recently, we demonstrated the impact of lipids extracted from the marine red alga Susabinori (Pyropia yezoensis) in a murine model of type 2-diabete (db/db). We found that Susabinori lipids (SNL), abundant in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-containing polar lipids, protected against obesity-induced hepatic steatosis in db/db mice. To understand the specific genes or biological pathways underlying the effects of SNL, we conducted RNA-Seq analysis of the hepatic transcriptome. By performing comparative analysis of differentially expressed genes between normal mice and db/db mice consuming a control diet, as well as SNL-fed db/db mice, we identified the 15 SNL-dependent up-regulated genes that were down-regulated in db/db mice but up-regulated by SNL feeding. Gene ontology and pathway analysis on these 15 genes demonstrated a significant association with the metabolisms of arachidonic acid (AA) and linoleic acid (LA). Furthermore, we observed alterations in the expression levels of monoacylglycerol lipase (Magl) and fatty acid-binding protein 4 (Fabp4) in the SNL-fed db/db mice, both of which are implicated in AA and LA metabolism. Additionally, the livers of SNL-fed db/db mice exhibited reduced levels of AA and LA, but a high accumulation of EPA. In conclusion, the SNL diet might affect the metabolisms of AA and LA, which contribute to the improvement of hepatic steatosis. Our findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of SNL.

Suppression of pathogens in properly refrigerated raw milk

Conflicting claims exist regarding pathogen growth in raw milk. A small pilot study was designed to provide definitive data on trends for pathogen growth and decline in raw bovine milk hygienically produced for direct human consumption. An independent laboratory conducted the study, monitoring growth and decline of pathogens inoculated into raw milk. Raw milk samples were inoculated with foodborne pathogens (Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, or Salmonella) at lower (L. monocytogenes in 8 of 12 replicates (P = 0.001 to P = 0.028). Analysis of variance confirmed significant increases for L. monocytogenes at both initial levels in week 2. No evidence of growth was documented over 14 days for the three pathogens predominantly associated with raw milk outbreaks in the US (Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella). Further research is needed to characterize parameters for pathogen growth and decline to support re-assessment of risks that were based on incorrect assumptions about interactions of pathogens with the raw milk microbiota.

Tuberculosis infection control practice and associated factors among health care workers in Ethiopia: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

The poor practice of tuberculosis infection control may increase the risk of transmission of tuberculosis in healthcare settings. Thus, this study aimed to determine the pooled magnitude of good tuberculosis infection control practice and associated factors among healthcare workers in Ethiopia.

Methods

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist guideline was followed for this review and meta-analysis. The electronic databases (Pub Med, Cochrane Library, Google scholar and grey literatures) were searched to retrieve articles by using keywords. The Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument was used to assess the quality of studies. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. The meta-analysis with a 95% confidence interval using STATA 17 software was computed to present the pooled practice and odds ratio of the determinant factors. Publication bias was assessed visually by inspecting the funnel plot asymmetry and using statistical tests using the eggers and begs test.

Results

Seven studies were included in this meta-analysis, with a total of 3256 health workers. The overall pooled magnitude of good tuberculosis infection control practice was 46.44% (95% CI: 34.21%, 58.67%). In subgroup analysis, the highest practice was in Addis Ababa 51.40% (95% CI: 47.40, 55.40%) and the lowest prevalence of tuberculosis infection control practice was in Amhara region 40.24% (95% CI: 15.46, 65.02%). Working in TB clinics (AOR; 7.42, 95% CI: 3.89, 14.13) and good TB related knowledge (AOR; 4.40, 95% CI: 1.76, 10.97) were the significant predictors of good TB infection control practice.

Conclusions

Only less than half of the health care workers had good practice of TB infection control. Working in TB clinics and having good TB related knowledge were statistically significant predictors of TB infection control practice. Periodic shifting of health care workers to work in TB clinics and an emphasis on TB infection control related skill based training was recommended to increase the TB infection control practice.
