Perceptions of academic staff and students of senior high school in implementing game-based exercises in physical education classes--a research protocol for a qualitative descriptive study

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on both physical activity and fitness as several pursuits and activities have been restricted. Coupled with this, increased food intake and sedentary lifestyles have produced poor physical health outcomes. Online physical education classes have been more difficult to conduct given the limitations of the setup. As such, exergaming has been identified as a possible educational tool that could improve students’ motivation, participation and fitness levels and reduce negative behaviours in class while contributing to the current curriculum.

Objectives

The study explores the perspectives of both the physical education academic staff and senior high school students from the University of Santo Tomas on the implementation of exergaming to determine the feasibility of exergaming as an educational tool in the Philippines’ physical education curriculum.

Methodology

A descriptive qualitative design will be used and participants will be selected through criterion sampling. The authors will conduct a process of question development and pilot FGDs beforehand to ensure smooth proceedings. Once done, they will undergo FGDs conducted through Google Meet. Data will be coded and analysed via thematic analysis using manual coding and NVivo V.12 software to summarise central themes and perceptions.

Ethics and dissemination

This study will abide by the Nuremberg Code, Declaration of Helsinki, Belmont Report, Data Privacy Act of 2012 and National Ethical Guidelines (for health-related research) of 2017. The study has received approval from the University of Santo Tomas (UST)-College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) Ethics Review Committee. All participant data will be labelled according to random two-digit computer generated codes to preserve anonymity and stored in password-protected laptops and Google Drive folders to preserve confidentiality. Results will be made available to individual UST physical education academic staff and senior high school students prior to publication in peer-reviewed journal.

Assessment of psychological terror and its impact on mental health and quality of life in medical residents at a reference medical center in Mexico: A cross-sectional study

Background

Mobbing, particularly in medical residencies, can lead to psychological terror with lasting mental and physical health consequences. Its impact on Mexican residents, however, remains underexplored.

Aim

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of psychological terror among medical residents at a medical center in Mexico City.

Methods

In a cross-sectional study, medical residents from various specialties were assessed for mobbing domains, quality of life, and anxiety/depression using the Leymann Inventory of Psychological Terror (LIPT), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Beck Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Psychological terror was defined as a LIPT score ≥ p80. Linear and binomial logistic regression models were used to explore independent predictors of mobbing and psychological terror.

Results

Of the 349 participants included (median age: 28; IQR: 27–30 years), 19.5% (95% CI: 15.5%-24.0%) were identified with psychological terror. Furthermore, 39% reported higher-degree trainees as mobbing perpetrators. Women in surgical residencies in their second or fifth year were found to experience higher levels of mobbing. Manifested bullying, workplace stigma, and inappropriate tasks were the most impacted mobbing domains. Anxiety, diminished mental health quality of life, and higher degree of medical specialization were independent predictors of mobbing. Meanwhile, increased anxiety, affiliation to surgical specialties, and being in the second or fifth year of training were identified as predictors of psychological terror.

Conclusions

Mobbing and psychological terror are prevalent conditions among medical residents in Mexico. Identification of occupational conditions and adverse psychological stressors can help to improve quality of life and training of medical residents.

Conductas sexuales según sexo y nivel socioeconómico en adolescentes universitarios de una universidad pública de Chile

Objetivo principal: Analizar las conductas sexuales según sexo y nivel socioeconómico en universitarios de una Universidad Pública de Chile. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, observacional analítico, de corte transversal en una muestra 94 estudiantes de primer año de una Universidad Pública de Chile. La recolección de datos se realizó por medio de la aplicación de cuestionario descriptivo de antecedentes sociodemográficos y conductas sexuales. Resultados: El 69,1% de los universitarios iniciaron actividades sexuales cuando tenían 16 o más años. El sexo masculino presentó con mayor frecuencia conductas de riesgo en comparación al sexo femenino. En cuanto a la frecuencia de conductas de riesgo por nivel socioeconómico no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Conclusión principal: Se descarta que el nivel socioeconómico sea un condicionante de las conductas sexuales de riesgo predominantes en el sexo masculino.
