Life Space in Community‐Dwelling Older Adults: A Concept Analysis

ABSTRACT

Aim

To clarify the concept of life space in community-dwelling older adults to provide a clear and standardised conceptual basis for further research.

Methods

Rogers' evolutionary approach was used to identify surrogate terms, related terms, attributes, antecedents and consequences.

Data Sources

Literature from 1936 to 2025 was searched from PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest, Cochrane databases, Scopus, Web of Science and CNKI.

Results

A total of 46 articles were included for further analysis and synthesis. The attributes of life space in community-dwelling older adults were dynamic variability, multidimensionality and interaction between intrinsic abilities and external environmental demands. Antecedents were classified into four categories, namely, individual, physical, psychological and social factors. Life space can bring positive consequences, promoting walking, assessing the risk of falling, predicting cognitive decline, facilitating rehabilitation and improving quality of life, as well as negative consequences, causing diminished subjective well-being, heightened loneliness, increased risks of hospital readmission and mortality.

Conclusions

Life space, as a spatial indicator of a person's range of mobility, reflects older adults' physical range of motion, the frequency of activity, their need for assistance and the level of social participation. Older adults with adequate life space in the community are more likely to engage in outdoor activities. In contrast, restricted life space can lead to adverse outcomes.

Impact

Surrogate terms, related terms, attributes, antecedents and consequences identified by the concept analysis approach will contribute to a greater understanding of life space. These analytical findings establish an essential conceptual framework for future research while offering evidence-based theoretical guidance to improve life space in community-dwelling older adults, ultimately enhancing health outcomes and quality of life.

Current Status and Factors Influencing Nutrition Literacy in Stroke Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

ABSTRACT

Aims

This study investigated the current status of nutrition literacy and related influencing factors in stroke patients, with a view to providing a reference for the development of targeted interventions.

Design

Cross-sectional study.

Methods

A convenience sampling method was used to select 342 stroke patients from June to November 2024 as the study population, and a cross-sectional survey was conducted using the General Information Questionnaire, Nutrition Literacy Scale, Herth Hope Scale, Chronic Disease Self-Efficacy Scale and Social Support Rating Scale. Descriptive analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used for data analysis.

Results

The results showed that the nutrition literacy score of stroke patients was 122.24 ± 16.66, and gender, age, education level, monthly per capita family income, nutrition education, hope level, self-efficacy and social support were the factors affecting the nutrition literacy of stroke patients (all p < 0.05).

Conclusion

According to the study, stroke patients' nutrition literacy has to be raised, and medical practitioners should create focused intervention plans to raise patients' nutrition literacy levels.

Relevance to Clinical Practice

Healthcare professionals should assess the level of nutritional literacy in order to provide targeted interventions. The establishment of a multidisciplinary care team and implementation of long-term nutritional management after stroke are essential to reduce stroke recurrence and mortality.

Development of a Deep Learning‐Based Model for Pressure Injury Surface Assessment

ABSTRACT

Aim

To develop a deep learning-based smart assessment model for pressure injury surface.

Design

Exploratory analysis study.

Methods

Pressure injury images from four Guangzhou hospitals were labelled and used to train a neural network model. Evaluation metrics included mean intersection over union (MIoU), pixel accuracy (PA), and accuracy. Model performance was tested by comparing wound number, maximum dimensions and area extent.

Results

From 1063 images, the model achieved 74% IoU, 88% PA and 83% accuracy for wound bed segmentation. Cohen's kappa coefficient for wound number was 0.810. Correlation coefficients were 0.900 for maximum length (mean difference 0.068 cm), 0.814 for maximum width (mean difference 0.108 cm) and 0.930 for regional extent (mean difference 0.527 cm2).

Conclusion

The model demonstrated exceptional automated estimation capabilities, potentially serving as a crucial tool for informed decision-making in wound assessment.

Implications and Impact

This study promotes precision nursing and equitable resource use. The AI-based assessment model serves clinical work by assisting healthcare professionals in decision-making and facilitating wound assessment resource sharing.

‘There is always good fortune in misfortune to encourage us in coping with difficulties’—The lived experiences of family caregivers of people with dementia during the COVID‐19 outbreak in China: A phenomenological study

Abstract

Aim

To describe the lived experiences of family caregivers of individuals with dementia during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in China.

Design

This study used a descriptive phenomenological research method.

Methods

Between May and September 2021, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 family caregivers of people with dementia. Colaizzi's method was used for manual analysis.

Results

Qualitative data revealed an overarching experience of finding ‘There is always good fortune in misfortune to encourage us in coping with difficulties’. Three themes emerged: family reactions to the COVID-19 outbreak, feeling supported by multiple resources performing respective functions and resilient adaptation to new situations.

Conclusion

During the COVID-19 outbreak, family caregivers of people living with dementia in China looked for positive aspects among difficulties and experienced corresponding reactions, social support resources and resilient adapted coping styles.

Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care

Nurses in China and other countries facing similar pandemic characteristics, cultures or economic development levels, can guide family caregivers to look at family hardships from a positive perspective, develop interventions to rapidly respond to families' reactions after a disaster and help them identify social support resources and form adapted coping styles.

Impact

We identified the resilience and the positive experiences of Chinese family caregivers of individuals with dementia during the COVID-19 outbreak. The results can inform countries with similar cultures and economic levels, offering measures to support their adaptation to pandemics.
