Nursing well-being is foundational to the specialties workforce and broader healthcare industry worldwide. Despite frequent reports and descriptions of activities that support nurses' well-being, most reports describe singular activities and programs that lack science-based structures contextualized within academic healthcare systems (AHS) with validated impact.
To evaluate and synthesize the existing national and international literature on nurse well-being initiatives offered in AHS.
Over 18 months, an 8-member interprofessional team conducted a scoping review adhering to PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. Five databases were searched, and results were screened in a multistep process by researcher pairs. Discrepancies were resolved by a third team member's review. Citations were reviewed uniquely three times to ensure methodological rigor. A final set of 54 articles was extracted for key data elements pertinent to the research question describing setting, population, study design, intervention, and other subsidiary fields. Reviewers additionally analyzed publication quality indicators and trends for additional implications for research and practice.
Among the 54 eligible articles, 72% were research and 28% were evidence-based practice, quality improvement, or doctoral dissertations. The concepts studied were psychosocial (e.g., resiliency) and physical (e.g., sleep). The number of instruments used per study ranged from 1 to 11. Thirty percent of studies utilized a framework from various disciplines that included nursing, social and behavioral sciences, and safety science principles. Nurses were included as authors 67% of the time, and 35% received funding from either the public or private sector.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential for clinical decision-making, integrating the best available evidence, clinical expertise, and stakeholder values. In Italy, interest in EBP is growing, and a key step in its promotion is adopting tools to assess nurses' beliefs and behaviors toward EBP. While the EBP Beliefs Scale has been translated and validated in multiple languages, it has yet to be adapted for the Italian context.
This study aims to adapt EBP measurement tools for the Italian context and evaluate their psychometric properties.
This study used an observational cross-sectional design. The process of cross-cultural translation, adaptation, and validation was adopted. A panel of experts culturally adapted the Beliefs Scales (long and short version) through the item and scale content validity (I-CVI, S-CVI). To test the psychometric properties, 409 nurses were asked to complete the two scales. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to validate the factor structure within the Italian context. Convergent validity between the long and short versions of the scale was assessed using the correlation coefficient (r), and the reliability was assessed by computing Cronbach's alpha.
The I-CVI and S-CVI for the long and short version ranged from 0.75 to 1.00. The CFA model performed for the long and short version reported a good fit without the need for further refinements. The Cronbach's alpha was higher than 0.80 for both scales. The correlation of 0.615 (p < 0.01) indicated a moderate to strong positive relationship supporting the convergent validity of the short version in relation to the long version.
In time-constrained settings, the short scale should be utilized for efficient assessments and longitudinal tracking of changes. The long version serves as a complementary tool for in-depth analysis, facilitating a deeper understanding of underlying factors and informing targeted interventions to address specific barriers.
Clinicians face challenges in implementing evidence-based practices due to limited resources and tools that can support their efforts in translating evidence into practice. To address this, JBI developed PACES (Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System), an online tool designed to streamline and support evidence implementation and quality improvement projects.
This paper reports the development of JBI-PACES and presents an evaluation of its usability (usefulness, satisfaction, ease of use) and user recommendations for improvements.
PACES was developed based on the integration of the Donabedian perspective on quality improvement and JBI's process model for evidence implementation, which incorporates context evaluation, facilitation of change, and the evaluation of both process and outcomes. Initially launched in 2004, the system underwent multiple enhancements based on informal user feedback from 2007 to 2017. A significant update, version 0.0.23 Build 1, was re-launched in late 2018. To evaluate its usability, we conducted a cross-sectional study using the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ), which also gathered qualitative feedback.
PACES supports evidence implementation by allowing users to conduct audits across multiple sites and over time, enabling data comparisons and insights into clinical practices. Findings from the usability evaluation showed high levels of satisfaction with the system's usefulness and ease of use. However, qualitative data indicated areas where further enhancements could optimize user experience and functionality.
The current study suggests clear benefits of PACES in terms of its utility and value for supporting evidence-based practices. Although the system performs well in usability, ongoing refinements are necessary to optimize user experience and ensure the tool continues to meet the evolving needs of healthcare professionals.
Work addiction is characterized by a compulsive drive to work excessively, often leading to diminished job satisfaction and negatively impacting professional quality of life and creativity. Critical care nurses require a creative mindset to deal with the variety of obstacles encountered during their work. Creativity is essential for succeeding as a critical care nurse in today's competitive world. Furthermore, creativity is crucial to healthcare organizations aiming to achieve excellence and development, particularly in the context of global growth, high demands, and a limited supply of human resources.
To investigate work addiction among critical care nurses' and its relationship with their creativity and professional quality of life.
A cross-sectional study was conducted in 4 ICUs at El-Menshawy General Hospital in Elgarbia, Egypt. All nurses were invited to complete a survey in Google Forms that included the Dutch Work Addiction Scale, Nurses Creativity Questionnaire, and Professional Quality of Life Scale.
A total of 242 intensive care nurses participated in the study: Pediatric (82), Medical (92), Neurological (30), and Cardiac (38). This study revealed that higher levels of work addiction in nurses were associated with increased creativity (r = 0.311, p < 0.001) and improved professional quality of life (r = 0.574, p < 0.001). Also, more than half (53.7%) of critical nurses had moderate levels of work addiction and just under half (49.3%) also had a moderate level of creativity and professional quality of life. Statistically significant differences were found between critical care nurses' levels of work addiction, creativity, and professional quality of life (p = 0.001). Multiple regression analyses indicated that work addiction and other parameters significantly predicted nurses' creativity (R 2 = 0.453, p < 0.001). Specifically, work addiction (B = 0.606, p < 0.001), compassion satisfaction (B = 0.692, p < 0.001), burnout (B = 0.438, p < 0.001), and secondary traumatic stress (B = 0.199, p = 0.025) were significant predictors of creativity. Additionally, attributes related to work addiction and other parameters significantly predicted professional quality of life (R 2 = 0.467, p < 0.001). Sensitivity toward problems (B = 0.874, p < 0.001) and risk-taking (B = 2.098, p < 0.001) were attributes that improved professional quality of life.
Findings highlight the need for strategies to manage work addiction among critical care nurses, fostering a balance that enhances creativity and professional quality of life. Implementing time management training, minimizing multitasking, and leveraging technology can improve efficiency and well-being in high-demand healthcare settings.
Although medication errors pose life-threatening risks to patients, and reporting them can help prevent future incidents, our understanding of the factors influencing nurses' intentions to report such errors remains incomplete. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms driving this association have yet to be fully identified.
The study aimed to explore the association between nurse managers' anger expression and nurses' intentions to report medication errors and to examine the mediating role of perceived uncertainty in this association.
Two separate studies were conducted. In Study 1, a methodological study was carried out between January and February 2024 to develop and validate a scale assessing nurses' intentions to report medication errors. This study involved 209 clinical nurses from two tertiary governmental hospitals in Mansoura, Egypt. In Study 2, a cross-sectional survey was conducted between April and June 2024 to test the study hypotheses. A total of 286 clinical nurses from three different tertiary governmental hospitals in Mansoura, Egypt, completed a questionnaire measuring leader anger expression, perceived uncertainty, and intentions to report medication errors. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
In Study 1, the findings provided evidence for the reliability and validity of the Medication Errors Reporting Intention Scale. In Study 2, nurse managers' anger expression was negatively associated with nurses' intentions to report medication errors (β = −0.77, p < 0.001). Perceived uncertainty mediated this association (β = −0.62, 95% CI [−2.80, −0.96]).
Nurse managers should implement strategies to regulate their expressions of anger, thereby alleviating uncertainty among nurses and potentially enhancing their intention to report medication errors.
Nationally and in Hawaii, nurses are in crisis with high rates of distress, burnout, and intent to change jobs. Organizations need evidence-based strategies to support nurse well-being.
Informed by the National Academy of Medicine Factors Affecting Clinician Well-Being Model, this study aimed to identify individual and external factors associated with nurses' well-being.
In December 2023, an online survey of hospital-based nurses from two major hospitals, representing various unit types, was conducted in Hawaii. Survey measures included individual (role, personal characteristics, skills/abilities) and external factors (organizational, environmental) that support clinician well-being. The outcome (well-being) was measured using the well-being index (scores ranged from −2 [excellent] to 9 [very poor]). The analysis included general linear modeling with stepwise backward selection.
The final sample included 552 nurses. Years of experience were evenly distributed, and the majority worked ≥ 36 h/week (85.9%), worked in intensive-focused or other specialties units (53.8%), and identified as female (87.3%). The nurses identified their race/ethnicity as 27% Filipino, 23% White, 14% Japanese, 11% Other Asian, 6.1% Hispanic, 5.1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI), and 14% mixed or other race. The average well-being score was 2.8 (SD = 2.3). NHPI had the lowest (Mean ± SD = 2.2 ± 2.2), and Filipino and White nurses had the highest well-being scores (3.0 ± 2.2; 3.0 ± 2.0, respectively), although no significant racial/ethnic difference was found. Several internal and external factors were significantly associated with well-being. For example, working ≥ 36 h/week, reports of experienced burnout, having primary caregiving responsibility outside of work, lower self-reported physical health, and the experience of workplace violence all increased average well-being scores (worsened well-being). In contrast, having higher personal resilience, no leadership responsibilities, the belief that their organization is responsive to complaints and concerns, and appropriate ancillary staff to support their work all decreased average well-being scores (improved well-being).
Healthcare organizational leaders and policymakers must urgently correct system issues contributing to burnout, suboptimal mental health, decreased well-being, and attrition among nurses. Healthcare organizations should cultivate wellness cultures and provide infrastructure that offers evidence-based interventions to support nurses' well-being.
Dissemination of results following clinical trials and community-based research provides value to participants and communities beyond the intent of the primary study. Organizations participating in multi-site research may see similar benefits if local results are shared; however, it is not standard practice. Evaluation of the impact of results sharing in multi-site research is needed.
To assess the benefits of organizational participation in a multi-site pediatric pain study when results were shared, identify how sites applied local results, and the outcomes of participation, including subsequent improvement efforts and scholarship.
Following data collection for a 12-hospital multi-site study, site research teams shared their experiences collecting the data and lessons learned. All sites received a packet with overall results, their local results, and an interpretation guide. 4 years later, the sites were surveyed about initiatives that were undertaken because of the primary study.
Following data collection, 10 of 12 sites described unanticipated benefits of participation, including identifying gaps and strengths of documentation, generation of new practice questions, and identification of new opportunities for improvement. Seven sites answered the follow-up survey 4 years later. Most sites (n = 6, 85.7%) used their data to inform multiple practice changes (M = 2.8, SD 0.75), including changes in pain documentation (n = 5, 83.3%), assessment (n = 4, 66.7%), policy (n = 4, 66.7%), and treatments (n = 4, 66.7%). Five sites reported an average of 2.4 (SD 1.14) additional activities stimulated by participation, but not directly due to data. Three sites used results for American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition applications.
When multi-site investigators provide local data, organizations see long-term benefits, including new collaborations, quality improvement efforts, and research. Additional exploration of collaborative strategies between investigators and practice settings in multi-site research is needed for pediatric pain management and beyond.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the cornerstone of sound patient care. Despite the known importance of disseminating EBP, of the 600 reporting guidelines registered with the EQUATOR network, none exist on reporting an EBP project. This lack of guidance leads to publications that lack rigor and discourages more novice writers who may not know where to begin.
The purpose of this study was to establish Reporting Guidelines for EBP projects by achieving consensus among subject matter experts (SMEs) regarding the required components for a high-quality report.
This study followed a modified Delphi technique. The first round solicited free-text responses regarding reporting sections and sub-sections. The team analyzed these results and incorporated information from the literature to generate items for the second round. In the second and third rounds, participants ranked each section on a Likert scale of 1–4 (not relevant to extremely relevant) and provided free-text revision suggestions. Items that reached a 70% consensus moved from one round to the next.
SMEs reached consensus on 6 sections and 30 sub-sections. Sections address the process for determining best practice recommendations as well as implementation into practice. Headers include (1) “Introduction,” (2) “EBP Design,” (3) “Methods to Generate Recommendations,” (4) “Evidence Findings,” (5) “Implementation,” and (6) “Conclusion.” All items are unaffiliated with specific EBP models, hierarchies, or question formats.
The Reporting Guidelines for EBP Projects is a checklist of items with associated descriptors that should be addressed in articles reporting an EBP project. The intention is to provide a roadmap of the items required to publish EBP efforts. It is meant to create a set of expectation for journal editors to provide concrete guidance for authors and elevate the quality and quantity of EBP projects in the literature.
A good adherence to pharmacological treatment in chronic pathologies such as type 2 diabetes and clinical depression is essential to improve illness prognosis.
The main goal of the TELE-DD study was to analyze the effectiveness of a telephone, psychoeducational, and individualized intervention carried out by nurses in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and comorbid clinical depression with prior nonadherence to pharmacological treatment. In this paper, we describe and analyze secondary outcomes of the trial intervention.
A prospective cohort study was used to assess the effectiveness of a telephonic intervention (IG) in n = 191 participants with a similar control group (CG). Adherence to pharmacological treatment was assessed using the patient's self-perceived adherence questionnaire. In addition to clinical (HbAc1, HDL, LDL), physical (body mass index, blood pressure) and psychological measures (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 affective state), and psychosocial distress due to Diabetes Distress Scale Questionnaire at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months of follow-up were also analyzed.
The proportion of “Total Adherents” in the IG was higher throughout the study. This was particularly true at month 18 of the intervention. Self-perceived adherence rates increased by 27.1% in the IG and by 1.1% in the CG. Results of clinical and physical measures were higher in the IG than in the CG at month 18 of the intervention.
The interview based on positive reinforcement as well as individualized attention and flexibility in making telephone calls and dissemination of the intervention in the media closest to the patients were key to achieving good participation and collaboration as well as continuity in adherence to treatment and self-care.
Many adverse events are identified as nursing-sensitive indicators (NSIs) and have evidence-based care bundles known to reduce risk of occurrence. Kamishibai cards are a tool from the manufacturing industry used for practice auditing and improvements. Use of Kamishibai cards is believed to be common in the healthcare setting, but true evidence-based guidelines do not yet exist to guide their implementation.
The aim of this integrative review was to identify best practices around the implementation of Kamishibai cards in the healthcare setting for improvement in NSI-associated outcomes.
Eleven nurses at three facilities worked through the evidence using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model.
Ten articles were included for this review. Broad themes included direct observation with non-punitive and timely feedback, clearly visualized results, use of evidence-based care bundles, pre-implementation education, and both leadership and frontline-staff involvement. All facilities showed improvement in NSI-associated outcomes after the implementation of K-cards.
In health care, K-cards can be implemented and designed with additional focus on the bundles of care they are intended to audit and staff support, but further evidence would better define guidelines around implementation.
The cumulative stress toll on nurses increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. An evidence-based practice (EBP) project was conducted to understand what is known about the impacts of cumulative stress within nursing and if there are ways to mitigate stress during a nurse's shift.
A project team from three clinical units completed an extensive literature review and identified the need to promote detachment while supporting parasympathetic recovery. Based on this review, leaders from three pediatric clinical units (neonatal intensive care unit, cardiovascular intensive care unit, and acute pulmonary floor) implemented respite rooms.
Follow-up outcomes showed a statistically significant stress reduction. For all shifts combined, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed that perceived stress scores from an 11-point Likert scale (0 = no stress and 10 = maximum perceived stress) were significantly lower in the post-respite room (Md = 3, n = 68) compared to in the pre-respite room (Md = 6, n = 68), Z = −7.059, p < .001, with a large effect size, r = .605. Nurses and other staff frequently utilized respite rooms during shifts.
Clinical inquiry and evidence-based practice processes can mitigate cumulative stress and support staff wellbeing. Respite rooms within the hospital can promote a healthy work environment among nurses and promote a self-care culture change. Evidence-based strategies to mitigate cumulative stress using respite rooms are a best practice to promote nurse wellbeing and mitigate cumulative stress.
Healthcare systems recognize evidence-based practice (EBP) as the prestigious standard for providing safe and high-quality patient care, nursing excellence, and Magnet Recognition. Despite the well-documented benefits, implementation of EBP is inconsistent and remains elusive in the US and throughout the world and many patients still fail to receive evidence-based care. The literature revealed a huge gap between nursing science and practice but provided evidence that nurse managers (NMs) had a pivotal leadership role in implementing EBP.
To gain a deeper understanding of Magnet-recognized hospital nurse managers' (MRHNMs) leadership roles, the influencing factors, and their experience in implementing EBP to enhance EBP initiatives and sustain Magnet recognition.
This mixed-method study guided by Goodall's (Australasian Psychiatry, 2016. 24, 231) theory of expert leadership used a sequential explanatory method with a quantitative-driven design based on a national correlational survey augmented by a qualitative descriptive component using semi-structured interviews.
The findings of the study demonstrated that MRHNMs had a 54.6% effective leadership role in implementing EBP and produced numerous themes indicating that MRHNMs did implement EBP with struggle. MRHNMs in this study viewed EBP as a healthcare priority and leadership of NMs is necessary to promote EBP. However, lack of knowledge, difficulties with the EBP process, time constraints, and staffing issues negatively impacted EBP. Postgraduate degree, formal EBP education, critical care units as workplace, collaboration with doctorally prepared nurses, and Magnet culture enhanced EBP among MRHNMs.
EBP is essential for Magnet recognition and is a hallmark of nursing excellence, however, is a complex and challenging process. The leadership of NMs is necessary to shape evidence-based care, and NMs require EBP preparation during leadership training, necessary resources, and time to complete the EBP process. EBP cannot become a reality without leaders being engaged, supportive, and persistent.
Outcomes associated with rapid response teams (RRTs) are inconsistent. This may be due to underlying facilitators and barriers to RRT activation that are affected by team leaders and health systems.
The aim of this study was to synthesize the published research about facilitators and barriers to nurse-led RRT activation in the United States (U.S.).
A systematic review was conducted. Four databases were searched from January 2000 to June 2023 for peer-reviewed quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies reporting facilitators and barriers to RRT activation. Studies conducted outside the U.S. or with physician-led teams were excluded.
Twenty-five studies met criteria representing 240,140 participants that included clinicians and hospitalized adults. Three domains of facilitators and barriers to RRT activation were identified: (1) hospital infrastructure, (2) clinician culture, and (3) nurses' beliefs, attributes, and knowledge. Categories were identified within each domain. The categories of perceived benefits and positive beliefs about RRTs, knowing when to activate the RRT, and hospital-wide policies and practices most facilitated activation, whereas the categories of negative perceptions and concerns about RRTs and uncertainties surrounding RRT activation were the dominant barriers.
Facilitators and barriers to RRT activation were interrelated. Some facilitators like hospital leader and physician support of RRTs became barriers when absent. Intradisciplinary communication and collaboration between nurses can positively and negatively impact RRT activation. The expertise of RRT nurses should be further studied.
Post-stroke depression is the most common neuropsychiatric consequence and reduces rehabilitation effectiveness. However, the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) on mental health treatment for patients after a stroke is uncertain.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VR as a co-adjuvant form of treatment to reduce depression in stroke patients admitted to neurorehabilitation units.
We systematically searched medical databases including PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to November 16, 2023. Clinical trials comparing the use of VR as an adjuvant form of treatment in stroke patients' rehabilitation with the usual treatment were included. Pooled standardized mean differences were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed according to type of stroke, VR characteristics, and the scale used to measure depression. Meta-regression analysis was performed for intervention duration and to determine the mean age of the participants.
Eight studies and 388 stroke patients were included. The VR interventions were associated with a lower risk of depression in patients (ES = −0.69; 95% CI [−1.05, −0.33]; I 2 = 57.6%; p ≤ .02). The estimates were not affected by the type of stroke, the type of VR used, the blinding process, the type of scale used to detect depression, the duration of the intervention (weeks and minutes), and the total number of sessions. Meta-regression shows that younger samples (p = .00; 95% CI [0.01, 0.08) and longer interventions (p = < .05; 95% CI [−0.00, −0.00) lead to a greater reduction in depression.
This review provides an important basis for treating depression in patients after a stroke. Professionals working in stroke neurorehabilitation units should consider VR as a form of co-adjuvant treatment for depression in patients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, acute care nurse managers functioned in a critical role by helping to advance the mission and goals of their organization while navigating a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. This resulted in high levels of ongoing job-related stress which is linked to negative physical, psychological, and job-related outcomes. Little is known about the perceptions regarding their own professional well-being during this time.
The aim of this study was to qualitatively describe acute care nurse managers' perceptions of and barriers to their professional well-being.
Using a qualitative descriptive approach, nurse managers from a hospital system in the southwestern United States responded to two short-answer, survey-based questions in 2022: (1) “Describe the definition of nurse-manager well-being in your own words” and (2) “What do you feel is your biggest barrier to professional well-being?” Reflexive thematic analysis was utilized to analyze participant responses (N = 80).
Professional well-being is a complex concept influenced by the nurse manager's ability to navigate work–life balance; care for their own physical, emotional, and spiritual selves; give and receive support from stakeholders; and manage feelings of thriving vs. struggling in the role. Barriers most cited as influencing well-being included having too little time to get things done coupled with increasing workloads, feeling stuck in the middle among stakeholders, and coping with ongoing staffing challenges.
The definition of and barriers to well-being are influenced by the specific needs and experiences of the nurse manager. While not all barriers can be immediately removed, the identification of individual and organization-specific barriers needs to be taken seriously, reviewed by those who can promote change, and evidence-based solutions for improvement piloted or implemented when feasible.
Missed nursing care is defined as care that is delayed, partially completed, or not completed at all. The scenario created by the COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced multifactorial determinants related to the care environment, nursing processes, internal processes, and decision-making processes, increasing missed nursing care.
This scoping review aimed to establish the quantity and type of research undertaken on missed nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. We searched CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus, two national and regional databases, two dissertations and theses databases, a gray literature database, two study registers, and a search engine from November 1, 2019, to March 23, 2023. We included quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies carried out in all healthcare settings that examined missed nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Language restrictions were not applied. Two independent reviewers conducted study selection and data extraction. Disagreements between the reviewers were resolved through discussion or with an additional reviewer.
We included 25 studies with different designs, the most common being acute care cross-sectional survey designs. Studies focused on determining the frequency and reasons for missed nursing care and its influence on nurses and organizational outcomes.
Missed nursing care studies during the COVID-19 pandemic were essentially nurses-based prevalence surveys. There is an urgent need to advance the design and development of longitudinal and intervention studies, as well as to broaden the focus of research beyond acute care. Further research is needed to determine the impact of missed nursing care on nursing-sensitive outcomes and from the patient's perspective.
Nurses' lack of clinical judgment often leads to adverse patient outcomes due to failure to recognize clinical deterioration, intervene, and manage complications. Teaching clinical judgment through a nursing process can help nursing students provide safe and competent patient care with improved health outcomes and to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of tutoring on clinical judgment of undergraduate nursing students utilizing Lasater's Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR). This study also compared the clinical judgment of male and female nursing students and students from different semester levels.
This quasi-experimental study utilized a single group pretest, posttest design. A convenience sample of n = 40 undergraduate nursing students from the Los Angeles County College of Nursing and Allied Health participated in the study. The participants underwent a pretest simulation, four sessions of the Clinical Judgment Model (CJM)-based tutoring, and a posttest simulation.
The posttest clinical judgment scores (35.70 ± 3.6) were significantly different from the pretest scores (25.78 ± 5.20). The tutoring had a significant effect on the clinical judgment of nursing students t(39) = −11.64, n = 40, p < .001, at 95% CI of the mean difference.
Enhancing nursing students' clinical judgment is crucial to provide high-quality, safe patient care with improved health outcomes. The CJM-based tutoring is an effective strategy for developing clinical judgment in nursing students. This new teaching approach can train students to critically think, develop clinical judgment, and prepare for the complex healthcare environment. Therefore, nurse educators should focus on integrating clinical judgment into the prelicensure nursing program curriculum as a priority.
Australia has been confronted with a severe nursing deficit, making it difficult to maintain a strong healthcare workforce capable of meeting the mounting demands of healthcare organizations.
This study aimed to understand how personal and organizational resources influence career optimism and job-related affective well-being of Australian nurses during a pandemic using the Conservation of Resource Theory.
A cross-sectional online survey was emailed to 123 Australian nurses from January to February 2021. The survey consisted of self-reported measures, including mindfulness, career optimism, job-related affective well-being, personal and job resources measures, and the Dirty Dozen scale. Correlations, independent sample t-test, and a series of hierarchical regressions were conducted on the cross-sectional data with SPSS Version 27. The STROBE checklist was used to report the results.
Findings suggested that mindfulness, perceived supervisor support, and job autonomy were significant predictors of job-related well-being, whereas mindfulness, perceived supervisor support, and opportunities for professional growth contributed more to career optimism of nurses during a health crisis. Male nurses in this study reported significantly higher mindfulness, career optimism, and job-related well-being levels than female nurses.
Developing mindfulness among nurses, allocating organizational resources to facilitate more supervisor support, and providing job autonomy may enhance career optimism and job-related well-being of nursing staff who work in disruptive and high-demand work environments such as those experienced during the COVID-19 health crisis. Supervisors should also facilitate and encourage nurses to reflect and be mindful of their behaviors with their peers and patients which can help to reduce exploitative or arrogant behaviors in the workplace.
