Chronic wounds present a significant challenge to society and have a negative impact on the quality of life and daily activities of patients. This review aimed to identify the cost-effectiveness of the currently used care alternatives for the treatment of chronic wounds. This study serves to identify cost-effectiveness boundaries and provide a basis for determining the cost-effectiveness of the proposed care alternatives. A systematic literature search was conducted in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Articles published on Web of Science and PubMed from June 2013 to June 2023 were included. A comparative analysis was performed using the data adjusted for inflation and transformed for the same time horizon. The median time to heal was approximately 2.5 months in the first quartile of studies ending at 1.3 months and the third quartile ending at 3.7 months. The average cost of complete chronic wound healing for all care alternatives in the study sample was $6435, with a median cost of $5814. This systematic review covers a diverse range of treatment alternatives, their health effects and costs and highlights the complex landscape of cost-effectiveness in the treatment of chronic wounds.

Cancer is the leading cause of death and morbidity among children and adolescents worldwide. Functionality-based interventions are relevant among children and adolescents with an oncological diagnosis, whence studies summarising evidence on this topic are needed. This systematic review will summarise evidence on the effect of interventions to improve functionality indicators among paediatric patients diagnosed with cancer.
This protocol will follow Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA)-Protocols reporting guidelines. The systematic review will be conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook and PRISMA 2020. Studies will be searched in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, LILACS and PEDro. Additional searches will include Google Scholar, reference lists of included studies, relevant reviews and trial registries. Studies will be included if they implement a functionality-based intervention. They must evaluate effects among paediatric patients with an oncological diagnosis. Secondary outcomes will include health-related quality of life. There will be no limits to language or year of publication, and articles published in peer-reviewed journals will be accepted. Only randomised controlled trials will be included. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2. Two independent reviewers will select studies, extract data and assess risk of bias. A narrative synthesis and meta-analysis will be conducted if studies are clinically and methodologically homogeneous. Statistical heterogeneity will be assessed using Higgins’ inconsistency test (I²). Meta-analysis may estimate combined effects using random-effects and the inverse variance method. The R statistical software will be used. The certainty of evidence will be evaluated for each outcome using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system.

Patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and their families face existential physical, psychosocial and spiritual distress. Integrating palliative care (PC) into ICU care may benefit patients, relatives and ICU clinicians. Prior PC studies have shown a reduction in ICU length of stay (LOS) and distressing symptoms without altering overall mortality. A shorter ICU LOS may alleviate the burden for patients and relatives and help optimise the use of limited intensive care resources. PC in the ICU, however, remains underused, partly due to limited access and knowledge of ICU clinicians. Also, robust data regarding the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of PC treatment in the ICU are scarce. We established the ‘enhancing palliative care in ICUs’ (EPIC) study to implement a system-based harmonised practice model across European ICUs. The aim is to investigate if early integration of PC via telemedicine, clinician education and bedside tools is effective and cost-effective, ultimately benefiting patients, relatives and ICU clinicians.
This multicentre, controlled, cluster-randomised, non-blinded stepped-wedge design trial with crossover phase aims to recruit around 2,000 patients from five European countries. All adult patients admitted to participating ICUs—with an ICU LOS exceeding 72 hours, where cancer is not the primary cause of critical illness, and who are not expected to die within the next 24 hours—are screened for the need for specialised PC based on the attending physician’s judgement. This judgement is triggered by the presence of one or more of the following: (1) significant disagreement among ICU team members and/or relatives about the appropriateness of current ICU treatment, (2) considerations of limiting life-sustaining therapy or (3) the anticipation that a specialised PC consultation may benefit the patient, their relatives or the ICU team. Patients identified as needing specialised PC and their relatives are then enrolled after obtaining written informed consent.
The complex intervention consists of (a) a blended-learning programme to foster knowledge and attitude about PC among ICU clinicians, (b) bedside tools, including a checklist to identify patients in need of PC and a factsheet and (c) standardised telemedical consultations from trained EPIC interventionists. Patient and relative follow-up is conducted 3 months post-ICU discharge. Outcomes include clinical measures (including ICU LOS (primary outcome), severity of critical illness, invasive treatments and health-related quality of life), economic endpoints (resource use, costs, cost–consequence situation, cost-effectiveness), ICU clinician burnout and distress, and patient and family perception about the quality of symptom management, care and communication. Endpoint analyses will employ generalised linear mixed models, accounting for the clustered data structure and stepped wedge design.
EPIC complies with the Declaration of Helsinki and has been approved by all local ethics committees. A decision-making structure is established to ensure trial procedures are carried out according to Good Clinical Practice. Study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and communicated to participants, healthcare professionals and the public. Sets of anonymised study data will be made available following Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable principles.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an effective intervention for improving metabolic health and mitigating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Nonetheless, the stability of these benefits throughout detraining periods and upon weight regain remains inadequately characterized. This study aimed to evaluate whether hepatic improvements induced by HIIT are sustained during detraining, even after body weight regain. Eighty male C57BL/6 mice were fed either a control (10% fat) or a high-fat (HF) diet (50% fat) for 12 weeks. Following this period, the animals were allocated to groups subjected to continuous HIIT or intermittent training cycles (each lasting 3 weeks). The outcomes assessed included body mass (BM), glucose tolerance, lipid profiles, liver enzyme levels (aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase), hepatic steatosis, and the expression profiles of genes associated with lipogenesis (Srebf1, Mlxpl, and Fas), β-oxidation (Ppara and Cpt1a), and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress (Atf4, Ddit3, and Gadd45). Compared with the sedentary HF-NT condition, continuous HIIT reduced BM and improved glucose tolerance. Intermittent training (HF-TNT, HF-NTN) preserved metabolic benefits and reduced triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Notably, hepatic steatosis was significantly alleviated in all training groups but persisted even after detraining. Additionally, HIIT downregulated the expression of lipogenic genes and upregulated the expression of genes involved in β-oxidation. The levels of markers indicating ER stress were attenuated by HIIT, with a sustained reduction during periods of detraining. HIIT-induced metabolic and hepatic improvements persist partially during detraining, despite weight regain. IntroductionChronic musculoskeletal pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting 11–50% of the population. In Spain, it accounts for up to 50% of the chronic pain consultations conducted in primary care settings. The most common disorders are carpal tunnel and subacromial impingement syndromes, with treatments, including surgical and nonsurgical approaches, notably the use of ultrasound-guided injections to improve symptoms.
MethodsA qualitative, phenomenological, and inductive study was conducted on patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome or subacromial impingement syndrome at primary care centers in Lleida to identify patient‑reported domains relevant to the routine follow-up of CTS and SAIS in primary healthcare, and to examine barriers and facilitators of treatments to inform patient‑centered follow-up protocols. Purposive sampling was used, and five focus groups were organised, selecting participants aged >18 years with or without prior surgical treatment. Data were collected between December 2022 and February 2023 using a semi-structured guide. The focus groups were recorded and thematically analysed using Atlas.ti.
ResultsTwenty-one patients aged between 44–75 years, predominantly women, participated in the study. The results were organised into six themes and 12 subthemes. The barriers identified were delays in diagnostic testing, overload of healthcare personnel, lack of coordination between care levels, and brevity of consultations. Effective communication, empathy of primary care professionals, and prompt management of treatments, such as injections, were highlighted as facilitators.
ConclusionThis study highlighted the complexity of managing chronic musculoskeletal pain and the need for a multidimensional approach. The identified barriers, along with facilitators, such as effective communication and empathy of professionals, emphasize the relevance of strengthening problem-solving capacity in primary care and fostering better coordination between care levels. These findings suggest that addressing these aspects may support more tailored follow-up and contribute to improving patients’ experiences of care.
To evaluate the feasibility of conducting a full-scale randomised controlled trial to assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the MAINTAIN intervention, designed to support recovery and independence following a fall among people living with dementia.

Community-based healthcare services across six UK sites representing primary and secondary care settings.
31 participant-carer dyads were recruited. Eligibility criteria included a diagnosis of dementia and a recent fall. Exclusion criteria included severe comorbidity precluding participation. The consent rate was 84%, and retention at follow-up was 81%.
The MAINTAIN intervention comprised tailored, home-based therapy sessions delivered by trained professionals, focusing on functional recovery, confidence and re-engagement in daily activities, compared with usual care. The intervention was delivered over 12 weeks with booster sessions up to week 24, with the full trial period lasting 28 weeks.
Feasibility outcomes included recruitment and retention rates, intervention adherence and data completeness for outcome and economic measures. Exploratory outcomes assessed functional performance and quality of life. Feasibility outcomes were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks and 28 weeks.
Recruitment occurred over an 8-month period (September 2023–April 2024) across six UK sites. Most intervention participants (89%) attended at least 60% of planned sessions. Completion rates for outcome and economic data were high, indicating strong acceptability and feasibility of both the intervention and trial procedures.
The pilot c-RCT demonstrated that recruitment, retention and intervention delivery were feasible and well accepted. Findings support progression to a definitive trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the MAINTAIN intervention.

The surge in postsecondary students reporting mental health concerns, coupled with increased utilisation of on-campus and hospital-based mental healthcare, highlights a need to understand effective service navigation. To address this system gap, the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) leveraged their unique expertise and resources to develop the University of Toronto Navigation (UTN) service. UTN introduces care navigators to facilitate postsecondary student transitions from acute mental health services to community or campus mental healthcare. There has been limited implementation and evaluation of navigator models specific to the postsecondary context to date, which hinders scalability. This paper describes the study protocol of Navigation to Enhance Post-Secondary Students’ Acute Mental Health Care Transitions, a study that aims to collaborate with students, navigators and clinicians to evaluate the UTN service.
A one-stage, single-arm multimethods study design will be used to evaluate the UTN service. We will recruit 103 students following their UTN intake appointment. Students will complete quantitative measures assessing health outcomes, experiences of care and service utilisation at baseline and at three subsequent time points across a 6-month follow-up period. The quantitative data will be linked to administrative healthcare data. The primary evaluation outcome will be defined as attending an appointment with an appropriate care provider (in person or virtually) within 30 days of discharge from the hospital. We will conduct interviews with students and referring clinicians to gather perspectives regarding their experiences and satisfaction with the UTN service in greater depth.
Research ethics board approvals have been obtained from the University of Toronto and CAMH. Results will be disseminated through publications and presentations, and a toolkit will be cocreated to support implementation and adaptation of hospital-based navigator interventions in postsecondary contexts.
To describe patient outcomes for patients at high risk of mortality (with a prognosis of three months or less to live) where a Palliative Care Nurse Consultant (PCNC) was embedded in a General Medicine team. To explore patients and/or their carers feedback and allied health, nursing professionals' perspectives on integrating a palliative care approach in the General Medicine ward.
Prospective exploratory study.
SQUIRE reporting guidelines was adopted for the study reporting. This study was conducted over six weeks in a general medicine ward at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Participants were 20 patients aged > 65 years with non-malignant, chronic conditions at high risk of mortality within three months and had 18 nursing and allied health professionals involved in their care. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and qualitative survey data were analysed thematically.
Twenty patients participated, with an average age of 87 years. 55% spoke a language other than English. PCNC interventions, focused on care coordination and family liaison, were found to facilitate timely referrals to other support services, improve communication and better address end-of-life care needs. Healthcare professionals recognised the benefits of PCNC involvement; however, a key qualitative theme was staff reluctance to raise palliative care needs due to perceived role boundaries and limited confidence. While PCNC presence improved communication and advocacy, barriers included time constraints and patient/family resistance.
Embedding a PCNC in a general medicine team appears to enhance care coordination and support timely palliative care integration. Addressing barriers and optimising workflow can improve patient, carer and clinician experience as well as improve resource utilisation.
The model has the potential to enhance patient-centred care and clinician support in acute general medicine settings.
The research will have an impact on acute care settings, particularly general medicine units, by informing models of integrated palliative care for patients with complex needs and enhancing staff capability and confidence in providing timely, person-centred care.

To evaluate the effect of mutuality on self-care in people with CHD and the contribution of their caregivers, and whether such relationships can be mediated by self-efficacy.
Secondary analysis of baseline data from a multi-centre longitudinal study.
Patients at the onset of coronary artery disease who underwent angioplasty, along with their caregivers, were included in the sample. Data from 136 patients and 136 caregivers were used for the analysis. Mutuality between patients and caregivers was measured using the Mutuality Scale. Self-care was measured using the Self-Care of Coronary Heart Disease Index and the Caregiver Contribution to Self-Care of Coronary Heart Disease Index. The actor–partner interdependence mediation models were used to assess the mediating role of self-efficacy for self-care between perceived mutuality and self-care behaviours.
An actor indirect effect was found between patient mutuality and their self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring, and self-care management, through the mediation of their self-efficacy. Caregiver mutuality had a positive indirect effect on their contribution to self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring, and self-care management, through the mediation of their self-efficacy. Caregiver mutuality had a positive indirect effect on patient self-care maintenance and on patient self-care monitoring, through the mediation of patient self-efficacy. All models demonstrated satisfactory fit to the data.
Mutuality between patients and caregivers enhances self-care behaviours in patients with coronary heart disease, and self-efficacy is a crucial mediator in this relationship. Interventions targeting both mutuality and self-efficacy within patient–caregiver dyads may improve self-care outcomes.

Scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines.
A multi-step search strategy was applied across different databases to identify studies published in English or Italian up to September 2023. Data were analysed using a Nursing Data Matrix based on the nursing meta-paradigm and the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) 4D-framework. Screening and data extraction were performed independently by pairs of reviewers; data were extracted and thematically analysed to identify existing research questions and potential priorities.
Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, and Embase databases were searched for studies published from 2013 to 2023.
A total of 351 studies met inclusion criteria. The majority of studies originated from the United States (35%). Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease were the most studied conditions, while rare diseases were scarcely represented. Most studies focused on nursing care (39%), with limited attention to rehabilitation (0.8%) and cost-effectiveness (1%). Although 70% of articles included at least one nurse author, 22% lacked any nursing authorship despite addressing nursing-related topics. Thematic and matrix analyses revealed an uneven distribution of research, with a predominance of descriptive studies and limited work in discovery-oriented research.
This review provides a comprehensive overview of nursing research in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting key themes and gaps. The findings informed the preliminary identification of new nursing research priorities in neurodegenerative diseases to guide future studies and enhance evidence-based nursing care.

Obesity affects over a quarter of the UK population and can lead to serious health issues. NHS Specialist Weight Management Services (WMS) offer treatments including lifestyle advice, psychological support and medications, but access and availability vary by region. Although around 4 million people could be eligible for NHS Specialist WMS annually, capacity is limited to 35 000, severely limiting overall access for those who need it. While digital technology has started to be used in WMS, more evidence is needed to confirm its long-term effectiveness, acceptability and cost-effectiveness. This study explores the use of Gro Health W8Buddy, a digital platform and app providing remote Specialist WMS. It aims to determine the long-term health benefits of remote WMS pathway Gro Health W8Buddy compared with standard NHS WMS delivered in hospitals, and to improve patients access to services.
The study is a real-world evaluation with observational data collection. We will recruit 450 study participants from four NHS specialist WMS who will choose either standard NHS WMS or the digital pathway Gro Health W8Buddy. Participants are being given the option to choose their pathway to generate real-world evidence. We will measure and analyse health outcomes including weight loss, time taken to be treated and cost-effectiveness, at 18 months and follow up at 24 months for later analysis (outside of this core funding). We will gather experiential data from patients and healthcare professionals through surveys, observation and interviews.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions account for up to one-third of general practice consultations and over one-fifth of emergency department attendances in the UK. Postpandemic, the elective orthopaedic surgery backlog remains one of the most substantial across surgical specialties. Despite this burden, undergraduate exposure to trauma and orthopaedics (T&O) remains limited and inconsistent. Most UK medical students receive only 2–3 weeks of T&O teaching, with up to 40% of foundation doctors feeling underprepared to manage MSK conditions. The Evaluation of Trauma and Orthopaedic Teaching in Medical Schools Nationally (TENDON Study) aims to evaluate the current state of undergraduate T&O education in UK medical schools from both student and educator perspectives.
This national, prospective, cross-sectional survey will be conducted between 25 July and 27 October 2025. A dual-instrument electronic survey was developed through Qualtrics, informed by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Undergraduate Curriculum and UK Medical Licensing Assessment content map. Participants will include medical students (Years 1–6), foundation doctors and orthopaedic educators recruited through British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association and BOA networks, and designated school representatives. Survey domains include curriculum coverage, teaching methods, clinical exposure and self-reported competence. Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics; qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis. Reporting will follow the Checklist for Reporting Of Survey Studies framework, with relevant elements drawn from the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys checklist.

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), anaemia develops and evolves as kidney dysfunction progresses. The treatment of anaemia is described in clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), which are designed to report the most relevant evidence for clinical practice in disease management. This study will analyse CPGs for transparency, methodological quality and quality of recommendations for their implementation over time, and also compare recommendations for the treatment of anaemia outlined in these documents.
CPGs will be identified by conducting a systematic search of the data sources CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, Scielo, Scopus, ProQuest, Trip Database, Virtual Health Library, Web of Science, and guidelines on websites, published between January 2009 and December 2025. Three reviewers will, independently, evaluate the methodological quality of the guidelines using the Appraisal of Guidelines for REsearch and Evaluation II (AGREE-II) tool and the quality of recommendations using the AGREE – Recommendations Excellence tool. The treatment recommendations for anaemia in CKD will be summarised and compared. Results will be presented in tables and descriptive statistics will be compiled for all domains of the tools.
This is a literature-based study and, therefore, no ethical approval will be required. Results of the study can be submitted for publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals, and also presented at national and international conferences.

To examine factors influencing emergency nurse turnover and retention pre- and post-COVID-19 and inform planned Participatory Systems Mapping research.
A scoping review of the literature reporting reasons emergency nurses leave, intend to leave or stay.
Following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and a pre-registered protocol, databases and grey literature were systematically searched in January 2025 (updated August 2025). Literature published after 1st January 2010, was included. Two reviewers independently screened records, and 10% of extractions were cross-checked. Data were grouped thematically on a visual coding system using the Miro platform. Pre- and post-COVID-19 sources were categorised and analysed using a two-dimensional framework of intensity and frequency.

Ninety-three sources were included. Burnout, workload, staffing and workplace violence (WPV) were linked across study designs to turnover, while job satisfaction, supportive leadership and team cohesion appeared to support retention. Problem-focused and resilience-based coping were associated with retention across study designs (n = 5); emotion-focused strategies were linked with poorer outcomes (n = 3). In a subset of 86 sources, traditional protective factors (leadership support and team camaraderie) appeared weakened post-COVID-19. A novel theme of moral obligation to remain, despite personal risk, emerged. Adaptive coping gave way to downshifting and emotional suppression.
The included evidence indicates that multiple, interacting factors shape emergency nurse turnover and retention, whilst systemic strategies aligning operational demands with psychological safety and core nursing values may contribute to sustainable retention.
Workforce interventions should address the psychological legacy of COVID-19 and focus on rebuilding trust, flexibility and moral sustainability in emergency departments.
While individual drivers of turnover are known, their complex interplay and retention factors are underexplored. This review identifies themes transcending boundaries and recurring across the turnover pathway, underscoring the need for multi-level interventions relevant to both nurse managers and policy makers.

Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury is common in intensive care and is linked to high morbidity and mortality, yet no specific therapy exists beyond supportive care. Excess circulating labile iron contributes to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death via ferroptosis. We hypothesise that targeted removal of labile iron during dialysis may reduce this pathogenic process. This study will evaluate the performance and safety of adding a novel iron chelator named MEX-CD1 (Metal EXtraction - Chitosan DOTAGA 1) to dialysate during continuous veno-venous haemodialysis (CVVHD) in critically ill patients with sepsis-associated acute kidney injury.
This is a single-centre, randomised, open-label, crossover phase I–II pilot study in the intensive care unit of Nîmes University Hospital, France. 14 adult patients with sepsis-associated acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy will receive two consecutive 24-hour CVVHD sessions: one with standard dialysate and one with dialysate supplemented with MEX-CD1 at 50mg/L. Each patient serves as their own control. The primary outcome is the iron concentration in the effluent to measure iron removal performance. Secondary outcomes include plasma iron clearance, trace element loss, biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, and safety outcomes monitored up to 28 days. Statistical analyses will use paired tests and mixed linear regression models.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterised by papules, pustules, transient erythema (flushing), persistent erythema, telangiectasia and phymatous changes. Rosacea can be associated with substantial effects on quality of life. Rosacea is most commonly treated with topical therapy, but little is known about the relative efficacy of these treatment options.
Since most randomised controlled trials of topical rosacea therapies do not include active comparators (ie, head-to-head comparisons), indirect comparisons must be made to understand the relative efficacy, safety and tolerability of these treatment options. The aim of this study is to conduct a living network meta-analysis evaluating topical therapies for moderate to severe rosacea. The results of this study can guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes.
Data search will be conducted in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science and Embase. Screening of titles, abstracts and full papers, as well as data extraction, will be conducted by two independent researchers in duplicate. Primary outcomes will include mean change in absolute lesion count, Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) and treatment discontinuation for adverse events or side effects. Secondary outcomes will include percentage change in lesion count, changes in quality of life, Patient Global Assessment, Clinician Erythema Assessment (CEA) and change in rosacea facial redness. For each outcome with enough qualified data, a network meta-analysis using a random-effects model will be carried out. We plan for a living review with continuous updating of the analysis as new treatments become available.

Binge drinking in the previous month was reported in 23.5% of US adults, and 28.1 million adults met criteria for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in 2023. Individuals with AUD face increased risks of oral health problems, including caries, periodontal disease and mucosal lesions. Poor oral hygiene, nutrition and dental care all contribute to these conditions, but individuals with AUD are often under-represented in oral health surveys. Understanding relationships between oral health behaviours, attitudes and general health is crucial for designing future interventions. This pilot aims to explore the relationship between oral and systemic health in subjects with AUD, focusing on oral health behaviours, salivary biomarkers and clinical phenotype, including systemic biomarkers of inflammation, to inform future research on oral–systemic interactions in AUD.
This protocol has two parts. Part 1 involves cognitive interviews to assess the content validity and interpretability of the Oral Health Behaviours Assessment (OHBA) questionnaire. Part 2 will collect biological and behavioural data from treatment-seeking patients with AUD and matched controls (age, sex and smoking status), including saliva, blood, dental exams, and health behaviour and symptom measures. Inpatients with AUD will provide biospecimens and answer symptom severity questionnaires at admission and again at the dental exam visit (7–12 days later), while controls will provide a single set of measures at their dental exam visit. Oral health will be assessed through structured dental and periodontal examinations, radiographs and validated questionnaires (including the OHBA). Additional data will include alcohol use history, psychiatric and medical history assessments, dietary recall, and measures of stress, sleep and mood to capture potential moderators of oral–systemic relationships. Biomarkers of inflammation and stress will be quantified from saliva and blood using immunoassays. Primary outcomes will compare oral health, salivary biomarkers and clinical measures between AUD and controls, while secondary outcomes will evaluate within-subject changes in patients with AUD during inpatient treatment and early abstinence.
This clinical protocol was approved by the National Institutes of Health Institutional Review Board (IRB #002005). Prior to enrolling, participants will be informed of the study purpose, risks and benefits, and study procedures, and evaluated for understanding prior to signing consent. Part 1 of the protocol is currently active and recruiting participants for cognitive interviews. The study findings will be disseminated through journals and conferences related to addiction medicine, psychology, immunology, neuroscience and dentistry. We expect the results of the pilot study will inform future research on oral health and salivary bioscience while also providing treatment-seeking patients with AUD targeted information on the importance of oral health behaviours for maintaining oral and systemic health.

To examine the association between nurse–patient mutuality (i.e., a good quality of the relationship between the nurse and the patient) and nurse professional quality of life.
A cross-sectional, multi-centre study was conducted across four tertiary hospitals in Italy.
Data collection took place from November 2023 to June 2024, enrolling 517 nurses. Both medical and surgical departments, as well as inpatients and outpatients departments were included. Data were collected on nurses caring for patients with chronic illness. Mutuality was measured with the Nurse–Patient Mutuality in Chronic Illness scale, which includes three dimensions: Developing and Going Beyond, Being a Point of Reference, Deciding and Sharing Care; Professional Quality of Life was measured with the Professional Quality of Life version 5, which includes three dimensions: Compassion Satisfaction, Secondary Traumatic Stress, Burnout. A Bayesian path analysis was employed to evaluate the contribution of mutuality dimensions to the dimensions of professional quality of life.
Nurses' sample consisted of 517 participants. The three dimensions of mutuality showed different associations with the three dimensions of professional quality of life. Specifically, Being a Point of Reference, along with Deciding and Sharing Care, was significantly associated with Compassion Satisfaction. The dimensions Developing and Going Beyond and Deciding and Sharing Care were significantly and negatively associated with Secondary Traumatic Stress. Additionally, Deciding and Sharing Care was significantly and negatively associated with Burnout.
As all the dimensions of mutuality were significantly associated with different aspects of professional quality of life, future interventions to improve nurses' professional quality of life may also consider nurse–patient mutuality.
Nurse–patient mutuality may be a novel area of research to enhance nurses' professional quality of life, with implications for clinical practice and organisational development.
Nurse–patient mutuality is a key indicator of a high-quality relationship, enabling shared goals and shared decision-making. Nurses' professional quality of life is one of the most important factors that influence their intention to leave. Little is known about the association between nurse–patient mutuality and nurses' professional quality of life. Mutuality influences nurses' and patients' outcomes. Understanding mutuality could enhance the professional quality of life for nurses, improving their compassion satisfaction and reducing their burnout.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, making the development of self-management strategies crucial for preventing complications and improving clinical outcomes. This process involves symptom monitoring, treatment adherence, emotional management and a healthy lifestyle, among others. Reliable instruments are necessary to measure self-management, requiring robust psychometric properties. In this way, this COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN)-based systematic review aims to assess the quality of specific self-management instruments for adults with CVDs.
This systematic review will follow the COSMIN and be reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocol. Searches will be conducted in seven databases: MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, EMBASE and CINAHL. Additionally, a manual search will be performed on PROQOLID, PROMIS and The Medical Outcome Trust websites. Studies on the development and validation of patient-reported instruments measuring specific self-management for individuals with CVDs will be included, without language or date restrictions. The search will be performed in November 2025, with the final version of the review expected to be completed in October 2026. Data extraction will follow COSMIN recommendations. The Modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach will be used to determine the quality of evidence. Instruments will be categorised according to COSMIN recommendations. All steps will be conducted by two independent reviewers, with a third reviewer involved in case of discrepancies. Additionally, the content of the instruments will be analysed and linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, following international recommendations.
This study does not require ethics committee approval as it is a review of published data. The review results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
