The prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) has been consistently increasing yearly. However, the radical therapy has not yet been established. This study is to confirm the superiority of acupuncture over artificial tear drops (ATDs) in patients with DED.
This study is a single-centre, investigator-initiated, assessor-blinded, parallel randomised controlled trial. 30 participants will be enrolled. Over a period of 4 weeks, the experimental group would receive two kinds of acupuncture three times a week. First, body acupuncture would be performed on bilateral BL2, GB14, TE23, EX-HN5 and ST1 for 15 min. Thereafter, intradermal acupuncture would be performed on the same acupoints for 4 hours. On the other hand, the control group would apply the provided ATD at least four times a day. As a rescue medication for severe DED symptoms, both groups can additionally apply ATD. The frequency of ATD use would be recorded during the trial. The primary outcomes are the Ocular Surface Disease Index and tear film break-up time. The secondary outcomes are subjective symptom Visual Analogue Scale, quality of life, Schirmer I test, tear lactoferrin level, treatment satisfaction and safety. The outcomes would be mostly assessed at visits 1, 13 and 14.

This study aims to investigate physicians’ familiarity and awareness of four diabetes guidelines and their practice of the recommendations outlined in these guidelines.
A cross-sectional study.
An online questionnaire survey was conducted among physicians affiliated with the Specialist Committee for Primary Diabetes Care of China Association of Chinese Medicine, using the snowball sampling method to ensure a broader representation of physicians.
1150 physicians from 192 cities across 30 provinces in China provided complete data.
Tertiary care hospital physicians (TCPs) exhibited the highest familiarity with the Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in China (91.3%), followed by the National Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Diabetes in Primary Care (76.8%), the Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes (72.2%) and the Guidelines for Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes in Chinese Medicine (63.8%). Primary care practitioners (PCPs) exhibited familiarity with these four guidelines at about 50% or less. Self-reported reference to modern diabetes guidelines by physicians is more frequent than traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diabetes guidelines, with rates at 73.2% and 33.8%, respectively. Approximately 90% of physicians provided instructions on self-monitoring of blood glucose to their patients with diabetes. Less than one-third of physicians referred patients to a specialised nutritionist. In terms of health education management, TCPs reported having a diabetes health management team at the rate of 75.7%, followed by secondary care hospital physicians at 57.0% and PCPs at 27.5%. Furthermore, approximately 40% of physicians did not fully grasp hypoglycaemia characteristics.
Familiarity and awareness of the screening guidelines varied among physicians in different hospital settings. Importantly, significant discrepancies were observed between physicians’ awareness and their self-reported reference to modern medicine guidelines and TCM guidelines. It is essential to consistently provide education and training on diabetes management for all physicians, particularly PCPs.
Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a known cause of a subset of head and neck cancers (HNCs). In the last two decades, the proportion of HNCs attributable to HPV infection has increased worldwide, notably the oropharyngeal cancers. However, the trend of HPV-related HNC burden is not clearly understood yet in China. Thus, the absolute
BROADEN-China is a nationwide, multisite, cross-sectional study. A stratified, multistage, non-randomised cluster sampling method will be used to select 2601 patients with HNC from 14 hospitals across seven regions, based on population density in China. Patients with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples collected prior to treatment induction during three time periods will be included, and factors (eg, smoking status, alcohol consumption, betel nut chewing, Epstein-Barr virus, teeth loss, etc) associated with HNC will be assessed. HPV testing (HPV-DNA, HPV-mRNA and p16INK4a immunohistochemistry) and histological diagnosis of the tissue samples will be conducted at a central laboratory.
The study protocol and all required documents have been submitted for review and approval to the Independent Ethics Committees of all the participating sites. The informed consent was waived for all participants and all the recorded data will be treated as confidential.
We have included 14 hospitals as our participating sites, of which Henan Cancer Hospital is the leading site. The study has been approved by the independent ethics committees of the leading site on 3 December 2020. The other 13 participating site names of ethics committee and IRB that have approved this study.
