Interprofessional socialisation can contribute to collaborative patient care. Although there is research regarding interprofessional socialisation of healthcare students and frontline staff, there is limited literature regarding healthcare educators in practice settings. Our aim was to examine interprofessional socialisation of healthcare educators in the practice setting following an interprofessional simulation facilitator training programme.
Explanatory sequential mixed methods study.
Quantitative provincial simulation programme evaluation data from 2022 and 2023 (n = 87) were analysed and used to inform qualitative interviews (n = 17). Qualitative and quantitative data were integrated following independent analysis.
There was a statistically significant increase in attitudes toward interprofessional socialisation following the simulation facilitator training programme. Qualitative findings revealed themes regarding interprofessional socialisation: (a) benefits gained through interprofessional socialisation, (b) interprofessional, uniprofessional or both, (c) facilitators to interprofessional socialisation, (d) barriers to interprofessional socialisation and (e) opportunities to strengthen interprofessional socialisation.
Despite positive views of interprofessional socialisation, socialisation behaviours may not be consistent in a variety of contexts. Interprofessional education may increase interprofessional socialisation among educators.
It is important to provide interprofessional socialisation opportunities for educators to promote more interprofessional education initiatives.
The findings of this study provided insights into how to foster interprofessional socialisation in existing structures and how new pathways might be built to connect educators.

To identify research gaps by mapping what is known about the barriers and enablers to pre-registration nursing students identifying signs of suicidal distress in healthcare consumers and providing clear pathways of support.
Scoping review.
This scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) five stage framework and the Levec et al. (2010) extensions of this framework.
The Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Complete and Ovid MEDLINE databases were searched to identify relevant articles, keywords and search terms to inform the full search strategy for CINAHL. This search strategy was then adapted for Scopus, PsychInfo, Emcare, Medline and ERIC, searched in November 2024.
Studies eligible for inclusion (N = 28) represented research from 14 countries; most (53.5%, n = 15) used a quantitative design, 11 (39.3%) were qualitative and two (7.1%) used a mixed-methods design. Barriers found from the scoping review included a low level of knowledge of suicidality, stigma preventing students from assessing and acting on suicidal ideation, and a lack of confidence in providing care to healthcare consumers expressing suicidality. Enablers included lived experience, exposure to individuals expressing suicidal ideation and education, simulation and role play. This review also contributes to the existing literature about the relationship of nursing to existing suicide prevention frameworks and suggests revision of these frameworks to address staff attitudes and beliefs, as well as lived and living experience.
Nurses are ideally placed to assess and respond to suicidality among healthcare consumers, and preparation should begin during pre-registration studies. Our scoping review indicates that further research work is needed to address the barriers to working with healthcare consumers expressing suicidality and to enhance the enablers to provide safe care.
Addressing the barriers and enablers to pre-registration nursing students providing safe care for healthcare consumers expressing suicidality is essential. Further research is required to address the barriers and enhance the enablers identified in this scoping review.
What problem did the study address? This scoping review summarised the literature on pre-registration student ability to work with healthcare consumers expressing suicidality, identifying barriers and enablers. What were the main findings? Barriers include poor knowledge of suicidality, stigma, fear and a lack of confidence in working with healthcare consumers expressing suicidality. Enablers include lived experience, exposure to clinical settings where healthcare consumers express suicidality and simulation and education. Where and on whom will the research have an impact? The research will have an impact on providers of pre-registration nursing degrees, where the inclusion of content addressing suicidality and exposure to settings where individuals express suicidal ideation is shown to improve attitudes and knowledge of suicidality assessment.

Although healthcare infrastructure has improved in recent years, the preoperative journey of patients is often accompanied by anxiety. Allowing patients to walk to the operating theatre is a simple, yet underexplored strategy that may enhance their sense of autonomy and reduce anxiety. As patient-centred care gains importance, evaluating the effects of this approach on patient-reported outcomes may be more relevant than widely assumed.
In this scoping review, we aim to analyse the published literature on preoperative walking into the operating theatre and patient-reported outcomes, such as anxiety and satisfaction.
This study was a scoping review that followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Scoping Review extension guidelines.
Inclusion criteria were adult patients undergoing elective surgery and walking to the operating theatre. Data were extracted using a standardised form, and critical appraisal was performed by using ROBINS-I V2.0, RoB2 and ROB-E tools.
Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane databases (OVID) and CINAHL (EBSCOhost) were searched up to 31st January 2025.
Our search identified 958 articles, with seven trials included in the final analysis. The studies, published between 1994 and 2022, involved 3001 patients from North America, Asia and Europe. The interventions varied, but most patients reported improved satisfaction and reduced anxiety when walking to the operating theatre. No adverse events were reported, although patient preferences varied, with younger patients more likely to prefer walking.
Walking to the theatre positively impacts patient satisfaction and autonomy. However, patient selection is key, as not all individuals are physically or mentally prepared for walking. Future research could explore unaccompanied walking and its effects on hospital resource utilisation. Preoperative walking is a beneficial intervention that enhances patient satisfaction and reduces anxiety, providing a feasible alternative to bed transport for many elective surgical patients.

This review explores the roles, competencies, and scope of practice of APNs in critical care based on international literature. It also derives implications for the development of advanced nursing roles in Austria.
Integrative review.
The research team conducted a systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science to identify relevant peer-reviewed publications from 2007 to 2023.
A systematic search of electronic databases was undertaken, following Whittemore and Knafl's five-step methodology. The included publications met the defined inclusion criteria and were appraised for quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklists. Relevant data were extracted and thematically analysed.
The analysis of 14 international studies revealed recurring themes related to APN core competencies and scope of practice in critical care. These were structured according to Hamric's model. However, Austria faces several challenges, including limited legal frameworks, missing educational structures, and a lack of role clarity. These factors hinder the implementation of APN roles.
Internationally, APNs demonstrate advanced clinical skills, provide leadership in team-based care, and integrate evidence-based practice. These attributes enhance patient outcomes and system efficiency. In Austria, restrictive regulations, limited education, and unclear roles hinder these competencies. Reform is needed to align with international standards, and further research should explore their implementation in Austria.
A gap exists between internationally demonstrated APN competencies and the current state of advanced nursing practice in Austria. This highlights the need for clearer role definitions, regulatory frameworks, and educational strategies. Addressing this gap would strengthen APN roles and improve healthcare quality. This study highlights the need to bridge this disparity.

This study was an investigation of the key factors influencing nurse retention and attrition focusing on the perspectives of current and former nurses within the context of the ongoing nursing shortage exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This descriptive, cross-sectional study was designed to explore the complex dynamics of nurse retention and attrition in a rural and northern academic hospital in northwestern Ontario.
An online survey was administered to current and former nurses to compare the perspectives of those with no intention of leaving the organisation, those contemplating departure within the next year, and those who had reduced their work hours in the past 5 years.
Of the 288 respondents, 47% indicated no intention to leave and 17% reported having already left the organisation. The primary reasons for attrition included excessive workload demands, challenges maintaining a healthy work-life balance and dissatisfaction with management practices and organisational support. Respondents recommended improving leadership effectiveness, increasing staffing levels and implementing retention-focused initiatives to enhance job satisfaction and reduce turnover.
This study underscored the urgent need for strategic interventions tailored to retain nursing staff, particularly in rural and northern communities already facing significant recruitment and retention challenges. By addressing workload pressures, enhancing work-life balance, strengthening leadership and offering retention initiatives, health care organisations can improve job satisfaction and reduce attrition. System-level changes are essential to creating a sustainable and supportive environment for nursing professionals.
The findings highlight the critical need for immediate action to address the nursing crisis in rural and northern health care settings. They emphasise the importance of systemic interventions aimed at improving staffing levels, leadership practices and overall work conditions to safeguard the future of nursing in these underserved regions.

To translate, cross-culturally adapt, validate and psychometrically test the MISSCARE Survey–Patient for assessing patients' perspectives on missed nursing care (MNC) in a Danish hospital setting.
A two-phase cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric validation study.
The study was conducted in two phases. First, the MISSCARE Survey–Patient was cross-culturally adapted to ensure its relevance in a Danish hospital context. This phase involved translation and back-translation, expert committee reviews and cognitive interviews with 18 inpatients to establish content validity. Second, a convenience sample of 284 patients from surgical and medical departments completed the adapted survey. Psychometric properties were evaluated using structural equation modelling to test a second-order formative model.
The cross-cultural adaptation phase led to minor and substantial revisions, including the addition of six new items to enhance content validity. These items addressed aspects of nursing care relevant to patients in the contemporary hospital setting that were not captured by the original survey. Structural equation modelling confirmed the second-order formative model and demonstrated robust psychometric properties.
The MISSCARE Survey–Patient was successfully adapted and validated for use in Danish hospitals, ensuring strong content validity and psychometric robustness.
The Danish version of the survey provides a valuable tool for assessing MNC from patients' perspectives in hospital settings. Its use can help identify specific areas where nursing care falls short, guiding targeted initiatives to enhance care quality and patient safety. By integrating patients' experiences into quality improvement initiatives, the survey supports the development of more person-centred care practices.

Scoping review.
A rigorous scoping review was undertaken following Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) framework and the modified Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for scoping review guidelines (2018). Five databases and grey literature were included in the search. Literature published between 2009 and 2024 was included.
Five databases (Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science) and the grey literature were searched in February 2024.
Three studies were included; however, none directly addressed correct non-sterile glove use during intravenous antimicrobial preparation or administration in clinical practice.
We found no evidence to support the use of non-sterile gloves in intravenous antimicrobial preparation. There is an urgent need for rigorous research to inform the development of clear guidelines on non-sterile glove use to underpin evidence-based decision-making in nursing and other health professional education, improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and promote environmental sustainability in healthcare.

Predicting medical/surgical nurses' delivery of patient pressure injury prevention education within 24 h of hospitalisation.
A cross-sectional sub-study drawn from a larger multisite randomised controlled trial.
A consecutive sub-sample of 300 randomly assigned control group participants was recruited from 20 medical and surgical wards at two major hospitals (July 2020 to August 2023) in Queensland, Australia. Semi-structured observations and chart audit data were collected, including patient education, demographic and clinical data. Binary logistic regression identified hospital site, clinical and patient predictors contributing to pressure injury prevention education delivery by nurses.
Seventeen (5.7%) participants received pressure injury prevention education within the first 24 h of admission. Body mass index was an independent predictor, increasing the odds of nurses delivering patient education.
Few episodes of pressure injury prevention education were observed in this study. As a patient's body mass index rises, they are more likely to receive preventative education from nurses soon after admission.
Our findings underscore the need for standardised inclusive protocols and ongoing nurse training to assess and address education needs beyond single risk factors like body mass index. Further research should explore other factors influencing patient education delivery in hospitals.

To explore how persons with cancer construct and socially position themselves in online blogs. Clarifying the discursive practice of self-construction can deepen healthcare professionals' understanding of how persons with cancer perceive themselves and their place in society.
Mixed qualitative and quantitative design using corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis.
Online blogs active between 2015 and 2023 were evaluated. Google search with keywords: ‘Blog about cancer’ was conducted. Corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis, following Fairclough's framework, was used to analyse data from four persons with cancer living in Norway.
The analysis identified three discursive practices in which bloggers constructed themselves: a discourse of a person's existence, a discourse of norms, and a discourse of a paternalistic system. The bloggers constructed themselves as being trapped in their own bodies, changed and vulnerable individuals who should conform to the expected behaviours, and not being seen and heard by the healthcare system.
The bloggers with cancer struggled between holistic and dualistic ideology, wishing to separate their bodies from themselves and constructed themselves as changed persons. Moreover, they struggled with societal expectations and adapted themselves to a paternalistic healthcare system, despite their desire to be seen and heard as individuals.
This study investigated the experiences of patients living with cancer, offering valuable knowledge for nurses, other healthcare professionals, and the government. The study uncovered that persons with cancer constructed themselves as changed persons and felt vulnerable socially and within a paternalistic healthcare system. These results may provide a stimulus for further discussions on the patient roles in cancer treatment and how to meet their needs for care and treatment.

This study aims to explore the relationship between nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding older adult abuse and their caring behaviours, focusing on Iranian nurses.
A cross-sectional exploratory study.
A cross-sectional correlational design included 250 nurses from medical education centres in Ardabil. A three-part questionnaire assessed demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding elder abuse and caregiving. Data were collected from August to October 2024 and analysed using ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis.
The study's findings are significant, revealing a moderate level of knowledge among nurses about older adult abuse. There are significant positive correlations between knowledge, attitudes, and caring behaviours, with higher education levels associated with better caring behaviours. However, practice scores did not align with knowledge and attitudes, indicating barriers such as workload and lack of training.
The findings reveal a significant link between nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward older adult abuse and their caring behaviours. Positive attitudes are associated with higher Caring Behaviours Assessment scores, suggesting that educational programs should enhance nurses' understanding and empathy toward older adult care. Addressing the identified gaps in knowledge and practice can lead to improved patient outcomes and a more compassionate healthcare environment for older adults. It is crucial to provide continuous training and support to empower nurses to apply their knowledge in practice effectively.
The study highlights the necessity for regularly occurring targeted educational interventions to enhance nurses' understanding of older adult abuse. Implementing continuous professional development programs for nurses can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce instances of abuse. Healthcare organisations should foster supportive environments that encourage the regular reporting of suspected cases of abuse and ensure that nurses are consistently updated on best practices. Increasing community awareness about elder abuse is crucial for safeguarding vulnerable older adults.

This study aimed to explore the direct and indirect effects of secondary traumatic stress (STS) on nurses' perceived work ability and the effect of these two variables on job satisfaction, organisational turnover intention and intention to leave the nursing profession.
A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to November 2023.
Data were collected by sending an online survey to a convenience sample of nurses. Instruments for data collection included a 37-item questionnaire divided into three sections: (i) socio-demographics, job satisfaction, organisational turnover intention, and intention to leave the profession; (ii) perceived work ability assessed through the Work Ability Index (WAI); (iii) STS measured with the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale.
Two hundred seventy-one nurses completed the questionnaire. STS negatively and statistically impacted on WAI, and it was a direct determinant of intention to leave the nursing profession. WAI showed a direct, positive and significant impact on job satisfaction and it was a significant partial mediator in the relationship between STS and job satisfaction. Job satisfaction mediated between WAI, the intention to leave the nursing profession, and the organisational turnover intention.
STS negatively impacted nurses' work ability, influencing their job satisfaction through the mediation of WAI, whereas job satisfaction independently affected nurses' organisational turnover intention. Moreover, STS was a positive and direct determinant of the intention to leave the nursing profession.
Nurses, as helping professionals, are exposed to extreme stressful events resulting from the traumatic experiences of patients. STS in nurses can lead to emotional exhaustion, turnover intention, job dissatisfaction and reduced work ability. The findings from this study offer insights that can help shape organisational health policies aimed at reducing STS, preserving nurses' work ability, enhancing job satisfaction and mitigating turnover intentions within and outside the nursing profession.

To explore the lived experience following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery of eight men and women in the South of England who had undergone surgery a minimum of 12 months prior.
This phenomenologically based qualitative study utilised Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a framework for the analysis and exploration of participants' lived experiences.
Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with eight men and women in the South of England in 2017.
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis revealed four superordinate themes: Managing change and uncertainty; The affective experience of change; The post-operative body within its relational context; and The presence and absence of appropriate support.
Participants described the complex nature of the post-operative experience and highlighted the deeply personal nature of the adjustment required following surgery. The process of change and adjustment does not represent a smooth transition from pre- to post-operative life, and the experience of weight loss is intertwined with relationships that require patients to renegotiate the ways in which they understand themselves within social encounters.
The clinical significance of this study lies in its support for the contribution that an existential phenomenological approach can offer in supporting individuals who choose to have bariatric surgery through its acknowledgment of the body as a site of experience which is situated within a person's wider social, cultural and historical world. These findings contribute an in-depth appreciation of the biopsychosocial experiences of individuals following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery that can be applied in nursing practice to better inform the development of appropriate ways in which to support the overall wellbeing of individuals who made the decision to undergo bariatric surgery.

To determine the association between patient characteristics, techniques, and technologies with first-time peripheral intravenous catheter insertion in paediatric acute care.
Single-centre, prospective cohort study.
Data on patient, provider, and peripheral intravenous catheter insertion characteristics were collected at a large quaternary paediatric hospital in Queensland, Australia. Inpatients aged 0 to ≤ 18 years requiring a peripheral intravenous catheter or who had one inserted in the last 24 h, were eligible. Proportionate stratified random sampling was used. Generalised linear regression with modified Poisson regression assessed associations between patient variables (e.g., age) and first-time insertion success, along with technique (e.g., inserting clinician) and technology (e.g., ultrasound) variables. Models were adjusted for confounding variables identified through direct acyclic graphs.
199 children required 250 peripheral intravenous catheters (July 2022–September 2023). In the adjusted model, each year of age increase and every 5-kg increase in weight were associated with higher first-time insertion success. Children with a history of prematurity had an increased risk of first-time insertion failure. Vascular access specialists were more likely to succeed on the first attempt, as was ultrasound-guidance when adjusted for difficult intravenous access risk.
We identified techniques (expert clinicians) and technologies (ultrasound guidance) that improve first-time insertion success in paediatric patients.
A multi-faceted approach combining technique (clinician), technology (ultrasound guidance), and standardised policy can improve first-time peripheral intravenous catheter insertion. These strategies minimise patient discomfort, trauma, and emotional distress, enhancing the overall healthcare experience for children and their families.
This study emphasises the need to standardise healthcare policies and training, incorporating clinician expertise and ultrasound guidance to improve first-time insertion success, particularly for high-risk patients.

Gender-based violence is a worldwide health and social problem with negative short- and long-term health impacts. Sexual and gender minority people experience more gender-based violence and significant barriers to support. These populations are often not included in, or are actively excluded from, gender-based violence research, and sexual orientation and gender are generally poorly measured and reported. One recommendation put forth to improve the evidence base with regard to sexual and gender diversity is higher standards of research and reporting by academic journals. Given the leading role of nurse researchers in this area of women's health, this is a topic of particular importance for nursing research and education.
We examined the sexual and gender diversity-related guidance provided by academic violence journals to authors, editors and peer-reviewers.
We conducted a descriptive document analysis. Two researchers independently searched for, and coded, guidance related to sexual and gender diversity from 16 websites of academic journals focused on violence research.
While most journals included some mention of diversity or inclusion, only about half provided in-depth guidance for authors, editors and/or peer-reviewers. Guidance related to gender was more common than guidance for sexual diversity. The journals gave varied prominence to diversity-related guidance, and it was often difficult to locate.
To reflect the spectrum of lived experiences of gender and sexuality, publishers must actively direct authors, editors and reviewers to include, measure and report these experiences. This has not yet been fully achieved in the important area of gender-based violence research, and is of direct concern to nurse researchers who contribute significantly to this body of knowledge.
Investigate the perception of male accessibility to the fields of nursing practice by those studying or teaching nursing in England.
Cross-sectional survey.
Online questionnaire with three closed-scale questions and two open-text questions designed to elicit perceptions on the accessibility of men to the fields of nursing practice. The questionnaire was distributed to the staff and students at 61 nursing schools in England. Inferential and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the closed questions data and inductive content analysis was used to analyse open-text questions data.
Students (n = 52) and staff (n = 51) responded to the survey. Adult (Mdn = 6, IQR = 2) and mental health (Mdn = 6, IQR = 2) were perceived as the most accessible fields of nursing practice to men, and child (Mdn = 4, IQR = 2) the least. Specialised practice areas in acute and emergency (Mdn = 6, IQR = 2), education (Mdn = 6, IQR = 2), leadership (Mdn = 7, IQR = 1), prison services (Mdn = 7, IQR = 1), and research (Mdn = 7, IQR = 2) were rated the most accessible to men and neonatal care (Mdn = 3, IQR = 3) the least. Societal stereotyping and stigma were seen as barriers to men entering the nursing profession. The perception that nursing is a feminised profession persists and a distrust of men is associated with child nursing. Men were viewed as progressing to leadership roles with greater ease than women.
Societal level stereotyping and stigma are perceived as prevalent in nursing practice areas considered less accessible to men entering the nursing profession.
This study adds insight into the gendered nature of nursing and highlights the barriers to men entering a profession with a workforce crisis.

To explore the social context of violence for hospital-based and community nurses from different ethnic groups, the types of violence experienced or witnessed both in and outside the workplace, and its impact on mental and physical health.
Cross-sectional, qualitative study using semi-structured interviews.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted online with 12 hospital-based and community nurses recruited from London, England, between May and August 2021. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.
The sample comprised seven hospital nurses and five community nurses. Four themes were identified: (i) the social context in which nurses from different ethnic groups are exposed to community violence; (ii) types of workplace violence experienced or witnessed by hospital-based and community nurses from different ethnic groups; (iii) perceptions of the factors contributing to workplace violence; (iv) impacts of violence on mental and physical health outcomes. Using the social ecological framework and sociological theory of stress, these findings informed a conceptual stress process model of violence exposure for nurses.
Nurses from different ethnic groups are exposed to violence both in and outside the workplace which negatively affects their mental and physical health. Effective violence prevention requires a multi-factorial approach that addresses the social and institutional factors contributing to violence, shifting the focus from individual measures to systemic organisational changes.
The NHS workforce is currently more diverse than ever, and healthcare leaders must improve access to mental health and well-being resources for staff affected by workplace violence, particularly for those who hold multiple social identities at the intersection of ethnicity, gender and age. Prioritising this support is essential not only to safeguard against negative health outcomes but also to improve the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals.

The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual understanding of the role of caring for older adults with combined vision and hearing impairment (DSI).
Dual sensory impairment (DSI) impacts both listening and speechreading communication, function and social participation, meaning that older adults often require support and care to ‘age in place’ successfully. Family carers play a key role in supporting older adults with DSI to maintain social and physical health.
This qualitative study uses Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory (GT) methodology. Data were collected between 2017 and 2019 and analysed using constructivist GT methods. Lengthy interviews with eight family carers of older adults living with DSI explored personal histories of DSI, relationships with families, social networks and health care professionals.
This study demonstrates that caring in this context is predominantly social and ‘invisible’. To reduce the social effort of their family member with DSI and to maintain their own self-identity, family carers adopted a ‘conscious caring’ approach. This is conceptualised as an approach to caring that supports family carers to access resources embedded in their social networks by bridging the gap between the dyad and their broader, more diverse social networks.
This study identifies that a reduction in both close and broader social networks limits personal, social and psychosocial resources and impacts the capacity of the dyad to renegotiate their roles, create and maintain their individual and shared social networks and successfully transition to living with DSI.
There is a gap in the literature regarding the impact of sensory impairments on complex communication, health and social care needs of older adults and the role that family carers play. Registered nurses require complex communication skills to support older persons with DSI during health and social care interactions. A better understanding of DSI itself, as well as understanding the key role family carers play in integrating care for their family member, is crucial to delivering person-centred care.
This study addresses a growing social gerontological issue and identifies the role that family carers play in integrating health and social care for their family member with DSI. Better professional recognition of DSI and increased visibility of the challenges of living with DSI could help address barriers to effective communication between service providers, formal care support staff and those with DSI. Integrating family carers into care teams is critical to improving health and social care experiences for both caregiver and care receiver.

To evaluate clinical nurses' perceptions and acceptability of procedure videos developed to support them during rare clinical procedures. In addition, a secondary aim was to investigate whether these videos reduce anxiety and enhance clinical reasoning.
A descriptive multi-methods study within a pre-post-implementation evaluation design.
Seven locally developed procedure videos (non-invasive ventilation (n = 2), temporary cardiac pacing (n = 3) and pericardiocentesis (n = 2)) were evaluated using questionnaires before and after a 6-month implementation period at a local health district in Australia. Participants self-rated their clinical reasoning skills in response to video procedures, mapped against the Clinical Reasoning cycle stages. The Spielberger State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) assessed anxiety towards rare procedures. Data from open-ended questions were analysed using inductive content analysis.
A total of 247 participants completed the pre-implementation questionnaire, and 133 completed the post-implementation questionnaire. Before implementation, many reported feeling heightened anxiety when faced with rare or infrequent procedures, reporting levels that exceeded commonly accepted clinical thresholds for concern. Content analysis revealed persistent concerns among participants, including the need for support during new procedures and a fear of making errors. Before implementation, participants reported searching online for videos to support undertaking new procedures. Following implementation, most participants reported that viewing the videos enhanced their learning experience and improved their clinical reasoning. Perceived anxiety towards undertaking rare procedures was not significantly different from post-implementation.
This study highlights the need for timely support during infrequent clinical procedures, as participants reported anxiety about them. It also demonstrates that procedure videos are valued tools for nurses before rare clinical procedures.
Rare procedures are linked to nurse anxiety and mixed emotions, some of which may be eustress. Organisations can enhance clinical resources for nursing staff by providing online videos tailored to local practices and context, which many nurses find helpful for improving clinical reasoning when undertaking rare procedures.
This study highlights the anxiety nurses experience before rare procedures and the significance of incorporating multimedia resources, especially online videos, in nursing professional development for rarely performed procedures. Additionally, it informs employers about nursing staff preferences.
